Is this the fake engine noise? sounds like gravel in my engine. thought something was wrong with mine but makes no bad noises in Normal mode.

can anyone post a sound clip of theirs? Sounds pretty raspy/rattly.

If it doesn’t do it in Comfort mode, then yeah, the culprit is the fake noise maker. You have 3 options:

1. Completely unplug the noise maker.
2. Use Comfort mode.
3. Use Individual mode, but set the Engine Sound setting to Comfort.

Note : The Engine Sound setting has nothing to do with performance. Also, there’s no solid evidence that setting the Engine Sound to Comfort turns the noise maker off. For me and many others, it’s fine. If there’s fake sound, it’s so low that it’s undetectable. You might consider this route if you don’t want to partially dismantle your dash to unplug the fake noise module, OR you plan to track your car. It can be quite helpful for the latter.

i only hear the rattly engine noise in Sport mode. Guess I just got to get used to it or unplug the module. Just sounds bad with heavy, sudden throttle inputs.

Rattling? That description doesn’t seem like it’s the fake noise maker….UNLESS it is exacerbating buzzes or rattles in the interior or something?

maybe that's not the best word for it. Just sounds very raspy like an old school Honda in VTEC.

maybe it is the VTEC...lol

OK. It is very likely the fake noise maker, then. At best it sounds somewhat realistic, mainly the low tones that are less localizable. Most of the time it just simulates weird, farty, sounds coming unnaturally from the footwells and A-pillars…you know…like old skool VTECs.🤣

Where is the fake sound produced? Does it feed through the speakers or is there a separate device? My old VW had a gizmo mounted to the firewall that was easily unplugged.

Check out this video from Project Bluray on YT.
I suggest doing everything he does, except for pulling out the dashboard AC panel.

Cheers.

there's a module behind the glove box. I've read different things though. Some say it's just artificial noise and others say it has a microphone in the engine and it's just amplifying the real engine noise. and others claim it's "piped in" somehow which i think is false. anyone know how it works?

On the type s. It uses the microphones to do this active noise cancellation when in comfort. It really does insulate U from sound very very well. Almost freaky. In sport and sport plus it’s piping in the actual engine and exhaust sounds. It’s not a track either because when I changed my exhaust the piped in audio definitely changed too. Same with the intake. It isn’t offensive at all. I really like it. The type r has some crazy fake engine track playing. It sounds like no engine I’ve ever heard in my life. Almost synthetic and fake.

on the type s. The mix seems to be 25% engine sound and 75% exhaust sound. On the type r I’m not sure if it’s pumping in the same sounds plus that artificial track because the artificial sounds are just super dominant. I wonder if it’s like this on the si too?

That sort of seems to describe the Si, but then the sound feels smoothed over almost like it's an old NES game. It didn't really annoy me, but I was bored one day and decided to unplug the module. No regrets but I will say that in spirited driving through the canyons, it's a bit too quiet now. But I still don't regret unplugging it. Probably my favorite "mod."
