I don’t think it matters.

my neighbor has a theory. Since a very huge majority of y’all proved it’s ok to pay over msrp. Honda may pull the type r and just let the type s exist.

edit: no offense to folks who paid over msrp btw.

Carmax will always low ball you so they can turn around and list your car for $48k minimum.
I've sold them 3 cars, they're always the highest bidder. If you look at their prices, Type R prices have dropped a lot - I think they target about $5-6k markup, but since their selling prices are usually so high, you get good trade in values.

I agree. I sold my 2024 CW FL5 with 11,000 miles to Carmax for 44,500. This was in August 2025. I presume the relatively high inventory of FL5’s have driven down demand. I’m sure it will pick up eventually.

Yeah, sounds about right, my own Carmax trade in value dropped from $46,500 to $41,600 in 3 months. Their asking prices have also dropped like $5k.

No one’s going to pay above MSRP for a used one these days so not surprised. I think it’s one of the reasons so many are interested in what’s happening after 2025MY.

CarMax is HUGELY cutting offers on vehicle sales and trade ins, profits have plummeted and their stock is down in a big way.

Private party valuation is still up. KBB values my 2025 with 4100 miles at 46,500 and multiple dealers around me have pre-owned FL5s for mid 40s. Still see markups for the few new ones around as of last month- and they were still selling.

Granted, different markets will be different across the US.

CarMax has MULTIPLE used FL5 listed at above new MSRP

My wife and I both sold cars to Carmax this year. Carmax gave her $10k above what the Lexus dealer was offering on trade for her Volvo, $10k difference.....

I heard the 2026 ITS will get the new 3.0 from the MDX Type S and SH-AWD. ?
lol...damn ai. it's out. Same exact car. I remember asking the Acura rep about a RDX Type S....he said "The V6 won't fit in it...." And I said, "well, you know we make Type S with 4 cylinders, why not put that 'exact' same block/engine in the RDX?!" he didn't reply :)

Yeah, CarMax isn't doing that anymore, they are cutting offers across the board as of the last couple months, they said as much in their financial statements back in October. You probably got in just at the perfect time.

Carmax used to just really inflate prices. They offered well above market value for cars and sold for even higher above- relying on lenient financing and convenience (simple shopping experience and no hidden fees or "add on"). However- after a year of very high financing failures and buyer economic hardship, they can't move volume at such high prices anymore and have been sitting on inventory. Their prices for both buys and sells are much more in line with traditional dealerships now- though still a little better to sell to them than trade in to a dealer.

Since 2022 CarMax hasn't been doing great, they are now starting to change their model a bit to match market expectations. Not that CarMax is doing BAD, they are still profitable, but they gotta keep shareholders happy. Hence their CEO "departed" in December

Is it possible Volvo was just giving you an absolutely awful deal and carmax was giving you a deal that's better than good?

If I pay $5 dollars for a tennis ball that someone else is selling for $20 dollars, can I really say I'm "saving" $15? No. Tennis balls are not worth that much, at least I hope not lmaooo.

Edit: Refined my analogy, realized it didn't make sense the first way I worded it lol.

100%, but I thought it was interesting to see that much of a discrepancy and the dealer would not budge even a $1. Drove over to Carmax, left with a check less than an hour later. Lost $2k on the tax credit but to come out $8k above was a win.
