Catastrophic Engine Failure

Because I just don't think the K20C1 is a great engine. It makes pretty "mid" power with mushy midrange, is not emotional at all, and massively limited by being front wheel drive. I really thought it was a great chassis, but for me bikes and cars are 80% about the engine experience. This isn't the Honda that got me hooked, and personally it did nothing for me. I nearly wept when I sold my 12k mile FA5 a few years ago, and I was over the FL5 in about 4 minutes.
I think it would be a great engine in something that is "sporty", but doesn't pretend to be a sports car, or in a FR layout in a new S2000 it would probably be pretty good. However, for Type R money, you could have a Porsche 981, 996, 997, 987, any Miata, Fox body with a Coyote swap, lots of M3/M5 options, and lots of other options that would actually be fast fucking cars. Hell, for a few dollars more you could buy a pretty good condition NSX.
Don't get me wrong; I think the Type R is great, it's just that for the money..... it's not that good. What's really absolutely insane to me is that people are paying ADM and financing at high interest rates. This car has just become a symbol of stupid, and no matter how much I liked it, it was still a FWD car with an image problem and a high price/poor value.

These are just my opinions, and you know what they say about that. I just know that my FL5 got all sorts of attention from the wrong sort of crowd, and coupled with the overall driving/ownership experience, I just felt like it was a waste of money. As I've written elsewhere, I traded for a CRV Hybrid and I think it's a better car, for a fat wad of money less.

FL5: Razor sharp handling, really truly impressive. Outstandings seats. No class all clout. Mehhh engine.

A secondary opinion is to wait for the forthcoming ADX which could very well have a K20C1 powered AWD Type S option.

You're getting a lot of flack, and I don't agree with everything you said, but I do agree that these newer Honda engines are a bit soulless. It's the one thing that has kept me from pulling the trigger. Had I never gotten the opportunity to test drive an FL5, I would almost certainly own one at this point. I know I'm living in the past, but the K series/F series engines were just really special, fun motors. The FL5 is a vastly superior car in many ways, but the engine characteristics/sounds really let me down. I'm hoping I get the opportunity at some point to drive an FL5 with some bolt-ons and a tune to see if that changes things for me.

Personally, and this is just my opinion, get it fixed and trade it in. The FL5 is a really outstanding handling car, but the engine is characterless and underpowered. I would get your value out if while it's still a hot commodity. Strike while the iron is hot so to say. It will always be a front wheel drive car, and right now prices on proper sports cars are going to where they were 5 or 6 years ago. Your opportunity to get something truly weekend worthy and a commuter at the same time are very good. Or, depending on your life situation, just bank the money during the recession and get a good buy in on future 7% compound interest.

I'm not a financial advisor, but the forums are awash with people fully indebted to both the banks as well as Type R identity, so you are sort of barking up the wrong tree here.

I've been on car forums since dsm.org days (1995 or so) and i've seen guys like that before. They sell the car for whatever reasons after a short stint of ownership, but yet always have 1 foot in the door to 'discuss' and to justify why they sold their car.

I welcome all discussion - good or bad, I just ignore all the noise and move on.

And I certainly enjoyed literally laughing out loud when someone pointed out the foxbody swap and his reference to cars that are nearly 20 years old (a 996? 987? WTF seriously W.T.F.). My brain literally couldn't process that the first time I read it. L.O.L.

The best part about the ADX recommendation isn't even that it is unreleased or certainly isn't a "proper sports car" -- it's not even that if (and that's a big if) they do offer a 2.0l version instead of just 1.5l, it will likely cost the same or more than an FL5 while offering less performance -- it's that their gripe with the FL5 was the engine... and then they proceed to recommend an ADX that if -- again if -- equipped with a 2.0l will most certainly use the de-tuned, de-cammed, de-turbo'd variant (not to mention the different pistons, smaller intercooler, etc.) from the MDX and TLX. If you didn't like the K20C1... why would you recommend a K20C4 for the same money? Literally nonsense.

In a vacuum, complaints about FL5 ADMs, the K20C lacking the character of the K20Z/As, or the limits of an FF configuration are legitimate. This take as a whole is... yeah.

Here I am in my shit box Civic extracting as many mehhhhhhhhhhhhh's out of the engine as humanly possible. They're probably all Coyote swapped. Guess I just passed them because they weren't fox body's.

I’ve been wanting to share my story on an engine failure that I’ve had with my brand new 2024 Civic Type R for quite a while now. For context, I am based in the state of Virginia.

I bought the car on 2/17/24 brand new from the dealership. Three days later, I was midway through my commute to work when my check engine light turned on and other errors popped up on my dash. A few seconds later, I started hearing a faint rattle coming from the front of the car. The rattle became more prominent and louder as a few seconds passed. I noticed white smoke coming out from the exhaust through my rear view mirror and I immediately pulled over as fast as I could as I was on the freeway and turned off the engine. I immediately thought that I had just blown the engine and I had the car towed to the nearest Honda dealership to diagnose the problem.

The next day, my advisor from the dealership informed me that a “catastrophic engine failure” had occurred with the engine and they had to get a master tech to diagnose the car. After a few days they had diagnosed the problem as a valve keeper that had somehow gotten loose in the engine which had thrown off the timing and ended up blowing up the engine. The car is in the process of getting the entire engine replaced and has been there since I had it towed on 2/20/24. I was told a few days ago that the parts had finally arrived for the replacement and that it would be up and running by the end of next week. I will have more information on the damage and hopefully some pictures when they have a full write up of the repair.

This had been such a massive fluke as I had only had the car for three days and the odometer only had about 185 miles on it as of the engine failure. The car is completely stock and most of the mileage had been from driving on the highway. Of course I babied the car and followed the break-in procedures as well; kept it under 4000 RPMs and never floored it. I’m wondering if I’m the only person that has blown an engine in a FL5 CTR up to this point.

I’m wondering if I have a lemon law case in my hands as my car has been in repair for more than a month (which is a criteria in the VA lemon law). I had contacted the dealership where I bought the car to request a replacement of the vehicle and of course they were of no help. A little bit before I hit the 30 day mark of the car being unusable in the dealership, I contacted Honda America for the same request and had made little progress with them. At this point, I am contemplating on going forward with an attorney so I can get a replacement for the car.

I would love to hear if any of y’all had ever experienced engine problems with the FL5 and if you guys have any advice for my situation.

Unfortunately something similar happened to me this morning on my commute to work as well. Everything was smooth and i was on the road for about 45 minutes already with light traffic, i shifted onto 3rd gear and once i released the the clutch the check engine light came on with also the battery light, but almost immediately they went off. No smoke came out and the lights didn’t come back on. I just hope this doesn’t happen to me again. I hope you have figured this out by this time but if i was you, i would immediately lemon law the situation.

I've known a couple guys who started playing the Lemon Law card (not Honda's). Dealer and factory reps immediately lawyered up and stop conversing. It's a bit like bringing a nuke to a minor skirmish. Sometimes it's warranted. The mention will definitely get their attention.

There was a similar thread on Reddit a few months ago. Dude bought an FL5, but apparently didn’t understand what the car was built for. He complained about harsh ride and other “issues” that can be said of virtually any performance car. Dude then bought a Camry and started posting in the TypeR sub about how much better the Camry is. It was like he was trying to warn people about the FL5 so they don’t make the same mistake he did.???

This whole “CR-V Hybrid is bettah” reminds me of that dude. Maybe it’s the same dude except now he be like : CR-V Hybrid > Camry > FL5 ?
