Fascinating...
https://www.civicx.com/forum/threads/type-r-knocking-noise-1500-2000rpm.77448/

I started a thread on this on the CivicX forums for my FK8. This "conclusion" that people seem to have come to of it being "normal" is strictly based off of the fact that many a Type R seem to have this noise, and nobody seems to have an actual issue in performance or some sort of problem.

Because we have not collectively figured out exactly what the noise is, we have sort of chalked it up to normal. It sucks because to me that's not good enough. Perhaps it is normal, but what exactly is it? I hate that im the type of person that needs to know. So this has been bothering me for 5000+ miles now. I have even since first posting this run out of the cars warranty period and tuned it. It now makes more power and everything is running fine. Still makes the noise.

One of the things that truly drives me crazy is I don't remember this being present before 15,000 miles or so. To me that would be something with some wear and tear starting to make noise.
It might be harmonics or vibrations

Does it sound like this under the hood? I’ve seen many FK8 owners mention this noise and never be able to figure it out. One dealer even replaced the entire long block and the noise was still there.

I’m suspecting PCV valve or valve cover. This was a suggestion by Techline.

It does seem similar, I'm now at 25,000km with heaps of track time going full noise without issue.

There are so many odd noises that come out of this engine that I've basically chalked it up to unbalanced engine and offset crankshaft creating all kinds of harmonics which manifests itself as such.

There's also a humming noise that's very prominent on cold start which almost seems like a throw out bearing cause it changes once clutch is depressed. Its not evidence once engine is up to temperature ?

Mine has had the noise since it was brand new.
PCV valve doesn’t click or move as much as I would expect one to. I’m going to order one to compare and replace. I will report back.

Thanks for getting back to me!

FL5 owner from Australia, wanted to chime in and say I have this noise too. I didn't pay much attention to it at first but after I got to about 3k km ODO, I almost money shifted to about 7200 RPM and started obsessing and focussing on all the noises and this clatter rattle noise when car is warm is one of them. Have you guys with the noise noticed this noise after a case of overrev or mis-shifting, heavy redlining? 7k km now and 18mth later car going strong. Thanks for the video samples and the post, it's always satisfying when you find these experiences by others deep in forums

Thanks for sharing. My car is still going strong. No issues so I just ignore it now. I have 23k miles and now have upgraded turbo and all fuel mods. Still going strong.

yep i have this i recently had a near money shift, just barely below redline. been updating my personal thread on what's been / being done to address/diagnose/fix as needed but yep this noise is exactly what I am experiencing. I'm glad someone was able to capture this via video as i have tried 4 individual times with no luck to create an audibly intelligible recording of this verbatim identical noise shown in this video

Did you get that PCV changed and have any updates?

Mine has had the noise since it was brand new.

saw the notification that someone had replied here, just in case anyone is experiencing this paired with any type of concern, this is what I have checked and determined that there is no issue

- '25 SGP CTR
- i've experienced this exact noise since brand new but have also had a higher load event in the car
- compression test result very good compression
- leak down test basically zero all around
- zero codes stored on the vehicle
- bottom end has zero damage of any kind. zero bearing spin zero heat coloration of any kind
- oil contains near zero particulate metals and is in healthy condition
- now at almost 9,000 miles with zero issue, tuned at 91 with full PRL bolt ons

for anyone with any concern about this, based on everything that I have checked this is completely normal for these engines as they are naturally unbalanced and produce lots of harmonics

This appears to be a fairly well documented experience and unless this is paired with any results that go against what ive listed above is likely of no concern

Do you have any sound videos of yours by chance?

What’s weird is some people say they didn’t hear the noise until recently. Others say they hear it off the lot brand new. I see fk8 and fl5 both have the same noise (not everyone)

Guess I’m confused how some people hear it all the time brand new and others who have 20-30-40k miles never heard it until now. It’s nice to know it’s supposedly normal but would be nice if we knew what was actually making the sound. Especially if the sound just started on certain cars

I think its that people may not notice it at first or are not listening for it.
Funny enough I dont have my FK8 anymore. Nothing ever came of it. Ran like a champ until I sold it.
I have now purchased a brand new FL5 off the showroom floor. This car has same type of sound albeit quieter.

I know this thread is couple years old and i may have spoken to a couple in here privately but if youre hearing this noise on your car and you’ve posted in here, check this on yours and report back.

get under your car and remove the silver tray to where you can see your oil filter, front pipe and transmission case. Start your car and leave it in neutral. Get back under the car and put ear near transmission case and tell me if you hear the same knocking type noise or rattle or however you describe it from inside the cabin or engine bay. If you only hear when revving slightly, have someone rev it while you listen underneath. Report back. Im interested in your findings.
