Just thinking ahead when I have to replace the battery. Does anyone know if we have to register the battery after it's being replaced? If so, how do we do it? Every car (that I know of) that has a battery management system (BMS) requires this - to let the car know that there's a new battery (and it's new specification), so it doesn't overcharge it. I'm 99% sure the FL5 has a BMS because the alternator doesn't put out a steady 14.4V. I can't seem to find anything on the interweb on this subject for the FL5...probably because nobody has replaced their battery yet? Anyone have any insight into this? Much appreciated. Thanks!

Before I replaced my battery, I tried to see if there was a registration process in the service manual (posted somewhere in this forum). I didn't find any. Plus, if there was, I should think the manual would say something like "please visit your dealer."

But that's just my experience. YMMV

On my old mk7.5 GTI U had to do some coding to tell the car there’s a new battery

on the fl5 it seems like the system sees a change in voltage. Rather from a new battery or charging. And it self adjusts from there. At least that’s what I’ve read on Reddit. I’ve no idea if that’s true tbh

I’ve owned many Hondas (and a couple of newer Acuras) and have never heard of registering a new battery. I’ve done battery swaps at AutoZone, Honda service, and on my own. None have required anything but a simple swap. The fact you’re not finding any info about it online nor in the manual is also quite telling. There would definitely be YouTube videos on this matter if it was a thing.

I have to do the same on my wife's S3. I use OBD11 to let the car know if the new battery is flooded, or AGM, etc and the AH of the new battery. Have to do the same for BMWs

Also used obd11

my nephew is flat rate at Mercedes. My son was flat rate at mini for a few years. It’s the same with them. Maybe it’s a German thing?

I've owned many Hondas as well in the past, but only until the 2004. I switched over to zee Germans since then and all of them requires battery registration due to having a BMS. Now that I'm back into a Honda after a 20years+ hiatus, just wasn't sure if this battery registration has caught up to Hondas too.

Could very well be just a German thing. However, since the alternator output appears to be variable, I suspect there must be some sort of BMS on the car. Maybe Honda figured out a charging algorithm without the need of battery registration?

Maybe in a few more years. Seems like the Japanese manufacturers aren’t adopting it at the moment. The mk5 Supra being the only exception. But…. BMW….

Not sure if true but I read Hondas and acuras see the battery voltage and keeps tabs on it. The second the voltage dramatically improves. It’ll know there’s either a new battery or the battery was charged externally. It’ll sort of reset the expected alternator output as a result.

This is true. The FSM and Alldata has procedures to reset the voltage monitor in the PGM-FI through HDS (or equivalent diagnostics tool), if needed. Its not typically necessary though.

This is the first time a Honda I've owned required a reset/recalibrate when disconnecting power. Whenever I disconnect/reconnect power or certain sensors, my 2022 Civic Sport Touring throws error codes en masse. I just connect my OBD2 scanner, hit clear all codes, restart engine, and everything is good again.

When I disconnected power, it threw some lights but iirc it went away after some minutes of driving and off/on. I didn't have to do anything

German cars have done this for years, not allowing owners to service cars themselves. Goes with not having oil dipsticks.
I never had issues with Honda's, though an OBD2 connected memory saver is probably a good idea.
