Anyone that has had the steering recall fix, please let us know if the repair corrected the problem.

i don't see how the recall would fix the deformed worm gear. might delay the issue. i wonder if those who had replacement racks installed already will run into the same problems. my original failed at 18k miles. i'm at 15k miles on the replacement rack and it's ok so far

I guess Honda is hoping only a small percentage of them are badly deformed, in which case the current fix will take care of the majority of others. For those who run into the problem again, because the gear is badly deformed, then perhaps the rack will be replaced (and would have the fix already implemented within). Just have to wait and see.

I worry about this. That the gear is damaged and could break while driving. It looks like its plastic. Not sure how well a plastic gear holds up if not lubricated properly against a metal worm gear.

Have any USA Type R owners received the recall notice by mail?

I've seen nothing.
I have not received an official letter in the mail but have received the notice within Hondalink.

I had a 2023 si before that had the sticky steering issue. It started around 5k when the weather got cold and was intermittent through the winter but seemed to mostly go away once it warmed up again. It did it a few more times when temps dropped in the fall but I traded it for the fl5 before the recall was done.

I signed paper work for the fl5 the day before the recall was announced. Pickup was delayed a few days so they could complete recall so my fl5 was probably the first one done by my dealer. I didn't get details on what they did but I assume the subframe was dropped.

I've only had it for a few hundred km but everything seems fine so far.

My understanding is it's not a severely deformed gear, it's just that the tolerances are off. For pieces like this tolerances can be in thousandths or even tens of thousandths of an inch. Depending on the tolerance of the interface a small deviation could cause it to bind under some conditions.

I suspect temperature related expansion and contraction of the materials are related to why I only had the issue when it was cold. One gear is metal one is plastic so there would also be differential expansion and contraction of the materials as temperatures change. As part of the recall they change the spring and if I had to guess I would say the new spring applys less force to the gears essentially reducing the required interface tolerance and allowing it to still function normally at a wider range of tolerances.

The worm gear is fine. The spring was strong and the pressure would cause the gear to squeeze out the grease. In the new fix the inject a TON of new grease and a revised spring. Should be fine.

We were dropping subframes but honda modified the recall and we now do them in the car. Tbh pulling the subframe was easier and you got more parts replaced. For what its worth ive only seen 2 rack failures out of many hundreds of effected cars (high volume dealer). I wouldn't worry about failure too much. If it does youd get a new updated rack anyways for free under warranty

I have NOT received a letter as of yet. I have a notification in my Hondalink app. I feel like I have the issue pretty much all the time. On center adjustments feel notchy all the time. The wheel doesn't move smoothly and exiting a curve when the wheel comes back to center again feels notchy. Not a smooth rotation.

i thought all the gears were made of resin

I never had issues but they fixed it when I brought it in for a oil change.

that's not what they said before the recall was released. they said the worm gear had a manufacturing defect that caused it to deform after so many heat cycles. guess it's magically not an issue anymore now they have this recall. probably trying to save money by not replacing tens of thousands of EPS gearboxes/racks.

I read on another forum that a guy in Canada took his car in for the worm gear fix and was told the fix was on hold as a new fix was coming out. I still haven't received a recall letter in the mail from Honda.
