6 months have passed since I posted this and things are still going great. I've since swapped out the Apexi Exhaust for a Fujitsubo and will probably be swapping the 1530cc injectors for the new Hondata 2000cc injectors.

Fingers crossed everything stays running well. The car is a blast to drive and no one ever suspects it.

Car is now FBO

Vehicle: 2023 Civic SI

Total tuned time: ~1 year, 3 months

Tuned miles driven: ~14,000 miles

Tuning device(s) used: KTuner V2

Tunes used: TSP Stage 1

Fuel used: 93 Octane + 1 Gallon E85 sometimes

Additional related mods: PRL HVI, TSP DP, PRL FP, PRL TIP, PRL FMIC and Charge Pipes, PRL RMM

Driving style: Spirited with daily pulls

Issues: Minor clutch slippage has started to happen on long road trips. My LT fuel trims have been creeping up when idling around 0.08 - 0.10. At first I thought it was tune related but I believe it could be a boost leak.
Now at over 25k tuned miles pretty much all on map 3 and the car has been great. Multiple full throttle pulls nearly every day with 0 issues. The fuel trim “issue” just seems to be ambient temp related, not worried about that. Clutch is still holding up well.

That’s great to hear, are you on aftermarket head studs or OEM?

UPDATE:

Vehicle:
2022 Civic Hatchback Sport Touring CVT

Total tuned time: 2 years and 9 months

Tuned miles driven: 55k miles tuned, 10k stock.

Tuning device(s) used: KTuner V2

Tunes used: Phearable 1.5 Level 3

Fuel used: 93 octane

Additional related mods: Remark Catback Exhaust

Problems/issues: None

Driving style: Aggresive driving during night time or when there isn't any traffic :)

Tuning experience notes: A little update on my "old" car. Just hit 65k miles, with 55k of them tuned. Can't believe its been more than 3 years I have owned this car. So far, pretty much reliable no issues whatsoever. Keeping up with regular maintenance (every 5k oil changes, 30k CVT). I am planning to change the rest of the fluids (brake fluid, coolant fluid) in this car soon. I also been procrastinating on my brake pads and rotors that needs to be done ASAP..

Edit: Just performed all fluid maintenance and noticed oil leak. Took it to my mechanic and it was determined to be Timing Chain Tensioner Cover...

Tuned miles driven: 300 miles

Tuning device(s) used: KTuner V2

Tunes used: Phearable 1.5r

Fuel used: bp or sunoco 93 octane

Additional related mods: Prl intercooler with charge pipes and high volume outlet, 27won front pipe, Prl stage 1 intake

Problems/issues: None

Driving style: Slow in traffic aggressive when open.

Tuning experience notes: Havent driven much yet, but it seems promising. Only tried map 2 briefly, but map 1 seems like a noticeable improvement already for daily driving. Rev hang reduction isn't a night/day difference, but still great to have. Not going to mess with map 3 until I upgrade the clutch.

The phearable 1.5r tune came with the early spool enabled. What will I lose or gain, if I disable early spool? Thank you.

Got my finger hovering over the order button for the KTuner and Phearable 1.5R tune, but there's one thing that's honestly killing me; the head studs thing.

A friend of mine (TheDeliSauce over on CivcX) had a tuned 10th Gen running Phearable, big turbo, etc. and he was making 300-something to the wheels - just a rocket of a car. He's pretty adamant that any amount of boost over stock will both cook the clutch and lift the head. The clutch is no problem, I've been wanting to throw the RV6 Type R kit in there anyway. The head lift thing worries the shit out of me, though.

I don't plan on going big turbo, or even using more than Map 2 on the Phearable tune, for that matter, so I know I'm not gonna be making over 300hp to the wheels like my buddy's car did. Part of me would rather leave the factory head studs in there and not introduce any potential problems with the one-by-one ARP stud method, which I think is just asking for a bent/broken gasket. The other part of me is still paranoid I'm gonna lift the gasket which will be a "pull the engine" type of job. Am I overthinking it, or should I really do the head studs before anything else?

IMO, it is a matter of when it is going to happen.. I would enjoy the car until it happens. I think with only a tune and no upgraded turbo etc, you should be fine.

Agreed. If you're not going crazy -- tune plus maybe a couple of other small mods -- then you should be ok. gtman has an equivalent thread over on CivicX, and reliability amongst owners has been good. It's what swayed my wife and me to tune her 10G EX and my 11G Si.

We're both on Hondata CARB tunes, and so far so good. (Granted, we don't have a ton of miles.) Not sure what your goals are, though. We just wanted a little more power in our daily drivers, so we don't drive like maniacs, but we do get on it as traffic allows. I just took my Si to the hills 3 days ago, and she ran like a top. :drive:

I ended up ordering the studs and will install them with the TSP 1-by-1 method. I figure they'll give me the peace of mind to drive the car without worrying about the head gasket every time I go WOT (which is quite frequent). I'll tune it next and keep it on a lower map until springtime, when I'll put the RV6 clutch in there and be all set.

My other car is an NA Miata, and in that car I never worry about how my driving might be damaging the car. I floor it, redline it constantly, and bang gears mercilessly and it takes it all in stride. I'm looking to get that feeling with the Civic, too. I know I'm probably over-speccing for the level of power you'll get with a stage 1 tune and factory turbo, but an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure, as they say.

UPDATE

Vehicle:
2023 Civic Si

Total tuned time: 1 year 6 months

Tuned miles driven: ≈ 17 000 km / ≈ 10 563 miles

Tuning device(s) used: KTuner V1.2

Tunes used: TSP Stage 1

Fuel used: 94 from Petro Canada

Additional related mods:
  • 27WON Downpipe
  • 27WON Frontpipe
  • 27WON Cold Air Intake
  • 27WON RMM 70a
  • RV6 Rear Sway Bar (Honda OEM Accord End Links)
  • Acuity Stage 1 Shift Kit
Problems/issues: None

Driving style: I spend most of my time in map 1 and sometimes (not often) map 2.

Tuning experience: Car feels amazing. Tuning is really easy to get into. The only thing I wish is that the TSP Stage 1 tune would let me adjust the throttle padding; I really hate that it changes in between normal mode and sport mode.

UPDATE: 30 000 km on the odo. I've been contemplating with the idea of going big turbo since my friend bought a turbo 86 but I'm not sure if I want to spend to money on all that I need to do for it (the clutch kit (+ having someone to install it), the head studs (+ having someone to install it), the intercooler, the turbo and the tuning). Not really sure if it's worth it for me.

Added 270 more miles to the Si, bringing my total to a pretty tame 1,350 tuned miles (Hondata CARB 240). Still enjoying it and pretty much just drive around in Sport for the full beans. My average MPG post-tune is 33.9 MPG vs. pre-tune 31.4 MPG. Not too shabby, considering the extra power.

Nothing new done to the car except disabled the ASC, which I think was one of the best things I've done besides the tune. I hated the fake noise. I also got a nasty rock chip in the bottom corner of my windshield. It hasn't worsened, and I don't want to pay for a new windshield, so I covered it with a sticker. :p
Resurrecting the thread for anyone researching tunes. '23 Si on Hondata 240 CARB. Stock otherwise. Added 810 miles since my last update. Total tuned miles of 2,160. No issues thus far. Still enjoying it!

@gtman thanks for starting this. I scoured through this thread prior to making the decision to tune my car. Here's me adding mine!

Vehicle: 2025 Civic Si

Total tuned time: 2 weeks

Tuned miles driven: 100

Tuning device(s) used: KTuner V1.2

Tunes used: TSP Stage 1, mostly on Map 3.

Fuel used: 91 octane (Costco)

Additional related mods: None yet, but I have a PRL RMM install on the way.

Problems/issues: I use Tunerview on my Android. While driving, I noticed that the boost parameter ID froze and it stayed that way for a few more drives. I tried unplugging the KTuner device, force stopping the Tunerview app, different combinations of starting the engine/starting the app. Nothing worked. I finally connected my laptop to see if it was also showing as frozen on my laptop, and that seemed to do the trick. Works now. No other issues so far.

Driving style: Typically fairly restrained, but a few aggressive bursts here and there to test out the tune since tuning.

Tuning experience notes: So far, so good.

I wanted to give a shoutout to @Two Step Performance - they have been very helpful whenever I had questions - most recently, I sent a question via email at 1:47pm and got an answer at 1:52pm - they are that quick. This is my first time attempting to mod my car in any way so I was very apprehensive about breaking something, but the level of support I got from TSP even before I purchased anything really gave me the confidence to move forward.

Finally, it's time for my first real tuning post! Before I installed the tune, I installed the ARP head stud kit with a good friend and CivicX member TheDeliSauce, who is truly a wizard with these cars. We did the 1-by-1 method that TSP outlines and so far, I've gotten no funny smells or smokes coming out of the exhaust. I think it's safe to say the head gasket is safe for now! Hopefully, the stronger studs will keep it that way. Anyway.....

Vehicle: 2023 Civic Si

Total tuned time: 1 day

Tuned miles driven: 20-30 (just some quick errands and gym run after tuning)

Tuning device(s) used: KTuner V2

Tunes used: Phearable 1.5R

Fuel used: 93 Octane

Additional related mods: ARP head stud kit from TSP, PRL High Volume Intake, Remark Link Loop exhaust, 27WON RMM, various suspension/handling mods but none of that is engine related

Problems/issues: N/A. I plan to run Map 1 and Map 2 until the spring when I can put the RV6 Type R clutch kit in there. Don't really want to overwhelm the stock clutch on Map 3.

Driving style: Primarily commuting, but a good WOT pull once or twice per drive. I also autocross the car frequently (hence all the handling mods and few powertrain mods until now)

Tuning experience notes: So far, so good! Flashing with the KTuner was so easy it's not even funny. Map 1 feels mostly like stock, but I think the throttle response is sharper and the boost ramps in a little more quickly. Map 2 feels like a 20-30% increase in horsepower and was enough to scare my fiancee in the passenger's seat. What's really amazing is how smooth the tune is; it revs so smoothly thru the rev range, shifts feel better, rev hang is reduced and I think it maybe even sounds a bit more aggressive? It snowed a lot here in central OH so I can't really evaluate the gains from the tune yet; the roads are icy and nearly any throttle input is met with ferocious wheelspin and VSA going crazy. I'll update this post when I am able to really drive my car again!
