I had initially been using some purified water and microfiber towels to clean my steering wheel. Then as that lost its effectiveness, I moved onto chemical guys leather cleaner with a horse hair brush.

That worked for a while and now it's not working at all. The left side of my steering wheel is way shinier than the left and no matter how much I scrub with the leather cleaner, it only gets moderately better, but never pulls the oils out.

I have a bottle of sonax alcantara cleaner but haven't tried it yet on the wheel.

Maybe use the microfiber towel instead of a brush with the leather cleaner?
Ive used both, initially I was just using the microfiber, and then I switched to scrubbing with the brush and wiping away with the microfiber.

Its been pretty cold where I am for a while now, so maybe I just need to heat up the steering wheel enough as well.

I like Sonax alcantara cleaner results. I use a soft sponge to apply and a microfiber to absorb dry and try to bring up the fibers on the Alcantara.

For leather I like colourlock mild cleanser and colourlock protector.

gives a matte finish to leather.

I use Meguiar’s Ultimate Leather Detailer with a microfiber. If it’s in bad shape, i recomend Obenauf’s Heavy Duty LP.

try a different product. Use a dedicated leather cleaner, then protectant if it's really dirty.

I bought the steamer from Harbor freight with a microfiber and that’s what I use on mine do a pretty good job, I even use it on the Alcantara. So far no damage to be reported on it, and you see the difference on the red treads.

I went at it last night with 3 passes of the alcantara cleaner and then a pass of the leather cleaner after waiting a few hours. The alcantara cleaner leaves it feeling matte and the leather cleaner from chemical guys makes it shiny again.

In either case I might try the steamer route...

I've never used a brush to clean leather. I think you might just need to find the right product and use a microfiber.
it's common with leather boots but never heard of anyone using one on a steering wheel. but leather is leather. I don't see how it would harm it.

I'll have to wait until morning until I get decent pictures, but this is what it looks like right now, left side of the wheel is a lot better than before, but still feels smooth and is shinier than the right (lighting is hiding a lot).

So wait why use alcantara cleaner on the leather steering wheel?

I have always used leatherique on leather seats and steering wheels. I even used it on an old leather couch and brought it back to life.

The sonax alcantara cleaner is safe for other interior materials as well (with proper prep and removal). I've used it a ton on everything and it's never caused any damage. I'll apply it, let it sit and pull out any contaminents in the leather and wipe it off then go over with some water.

Only reason I even tried it is because the chemical guys leather cleaner wasn't pulling enough oil.
