What's strange is I'm hearing rumors of a Type R version of the Prelude in the works.. I"m not sure if it's true.. Anyone hear about this?

Yes. I think this is a string possibility.
possibly with a bit more power date I say.

It will be a 2.0L engine but its the exact same hybrid engine found in the 11th Gen Civic Hybrid, CR-V Hybrid and Accord Hybrid

It just doesn't seem to make much sense. Honda only has one 2.0 turbo platform. For 2026 and forward, it won't be a viable powerplant in Europe or Japan. Additionally, in killing the TLX, they've cut down on the number of vehicles that utilize it.

I'm actually surprised they're going to produce the Prelude, and I think if they had known what the state of the car market would be on its release, they probably wouldn't have gone through with it. In the US, more Americans are behind on and missing car payments than in 2009, and tariffs are having a real impact on pricing and profit (see GM's latest).

I think niche vehicles are about to take it on the chin over the next couple years, sadly. (At least those not marketed to the wealthy, and this car is not.)

I want nothing to do with the complex hassles of a hybrid and especially EV vehicles, since IMO battery tech and infrastructure isn't up to speed just yet.

I bought the FL5 because it might be the last hurrah for old school mechanical and gasoline 4 cyl. engineering, and from Honda who does it best. I hope they continue for at least one more year to hopefully enhance factory and aftermarket support.

Honda wouldn't dare make a Prelude Type R while axing other market CTRs. The Prelude has always been a 2 door sport tourer, they did have a Japan only Type-S spec, but Type-S is not and never was meant to be a "Type-R" equivalent. Honda cares too much about the Type-R badge to do that.

What I think we will see is the Type-R as a plate will disappear for a while, we will bet Si specs starting to use hybrid power trains for a generation while they develop the Next Type-R revival, which will probably be a 2 liter with an even smaller low boost turbo or 1.5T both with dual motor hybrid. The CTR as it is isn't too far off from hitting emissions requirements for EU, they would just need to bring emissions down a little, and offset it with a hybrid drivetrain.

Honestly, I think the Type-R will be gone either end of this year/very early 2026- and probably get revived in MY 2029+

The ultimate edition already delivered in Europe this month so Europe likely will end with 25. I agree Honda most likely wouldn't make FL5 globally if Japan doesn't get it so 26 will likely be it. If they announce limited edition in September, that would be the confirmation just like the ultimate edition for Europe.

And I also think ITS will end with FL5. It doesn't make sense for them to make the low volume car/engine just for USA. The TLX termination is an example.
The 2.0 turbo comes in the RDX and they also sell it as a crate engine. ITS will likely live on until the end of the generation. Might have decided to make it in the US for a reason. Honda probably knew from the beginning that the FL5 wouldn't last the whole generation.

The block/crank is the same. Cams, pistons, turbo, injectors, etc. are all different. Honda would only be building this version of the engine for ~3,300 cars / year. That's a substantial decrease from what they are doing right now. I think they are producing ~10k CTRs / year? + ~3k ITS? That's a 75% reduction in build count for production C1/C8 engines to just support the DE5.

Not to mention the CTR spec 2.0 engine is only made in the US. Logistics don't make sense to ship them over to Japan for extremely low production numbers.

Since integra has it's own exterior and interior parts different from FL5 and ITS 4k production numbers is low, they have to make it along with integra in US. RDX is a 35k-40k production cars so they can operate in it's own line. Even current K20 is only made 15k-20k a year only. TLX dropped to under 10k production in 24 so maybe around 10k annual production is a decision line.

I'm just thinking in business operation logistics perspective because I don't have any insider source. FL5/ITS have a different engine, transmission, intercooler, turbo, exhaust, suspension, brakes, wheels etc from regular integra, if FL5 is done, keeping parts for just ITS is costly and not effective.

I know mine is not a popular opinion but just want to share my thought. I'm sure Honda can keep making ITS or stop FL5 for 25. It's possible and doable and Honda is already making ITS in US but I think the odds are relatively lower mostly due to the underlying cost with suppliers. It depends on if they can still make money or not selling that car to make that decision.

The HRC is to showcase Honda parts that might make it to market. The car itself is a prototype and not road legal so it won’t be available for purchase. This was previously stated in press releases.

Most likely the fl5 will be discontinued and the de5 along with the prelude will take it's place. I remember reading something about the motor having to be shipped to Japan which doesn't really make sense.

Yeah that's been a thing for a while. Even when the FK2 Type R was built in 2015, the engines were built in the US.

The comment was deleted, but on this Reddit thread in R/Civic_Type_R, someone claiming to be the head of marketing for the Type R (or something) said that there will be an announcement regarding the North American Type R in November and that they were "going out with a bang." Something like that. Could be bs, but figured I'd post it here anyway: Link to Reddit thread

Also, went to Airventure Oshkosh last month and spoke to the Honda reps there. The woman I spoke to wouldn't confirm or deny a 2026 Type R or a next generation, but told me that it's the best-selling hot hatch in the States, and alluded to the Type R name continuing in some way.
