Hello All,

I wanted to see what other people are using for gas. Where I live, 91 if available is 1.25$ more a gallon. I am not tracking the car. Is there any big downsides to using 87. Also if they don't have 91 they have 93. What is best to use in that situation as well? Money is tight and the 1.25 per gallon will help as long as I am not hurting the car. Thanks for your input.

If you want to protect your investment, 91 is the only way to go here when compared to 87. I would consider 87 for use for emergencies only and would be as light on the throttle as possible if 87 is in the tank.

To be honest 91 isn't great, but it is safe. 93 is preferred.

Regular Unleaded Gasoline is required fuel for the Civic Type R; however, premium is recommended. With that said, you can run 87 octane just fine.

I read the non-Si 1.5T's have a fair number of head gasket issues over time and there is speculation knocking from 87 octane fuel may be root cause of the gasket web failures. The non-Si engines make more dyno HP on premium, so the knock sensor retards timing after sensing knock on regular fuel.

I owned other Honda cars recommending premium, and they knock for a second on regular before the timing adjusts. I buy only premium now, but find stations where the price difference isn't bad (Costco, BJ's, Maverik).

91 is the minimum you should use, and what the car is tuned for.

91 is recommended. (91+ really)
87 is minimum.
It says so right on the fuel door.

I would only use 87 in a pinch. Sure the car can adjust timing to handle some engine knock, but I personally would not drive the car hard on 87.

TopTier is a “stamp of approval” for fuel/additive quality. It has nothing to do with octane ratings. I agree, however, that sticking with TopTier is ?. Shell has great gas too, though I don’t think they are TopTier certified. They must feel their reputation precedes such a thing and I’m not one to argue that.?

Shell is Top Tier. It's always been on the list.

BP is the one that refuses to get on the top tier list but has gas that can qualify for top tier.

You’re right! I got my wires crossed yet again (a seemingly common thing these days ?). It’s BP that’s no longer Top Tier, though they claim their additives exceed Top Tier requirements.

I only run 93 BP or Shell in my R. However, modern Ecu's are able to detect knock and adjust accordingly. I personally wouldn't play that game, but it will be just fine.

If you are struggling with money just put 1 gallon of ethanol to the tank of 87 and see how it goes, that should helps to elevate the octane number, my recommendation is not to use that but every wallet is different.

I’m no chemist, but I don’t think you want to mess with ethanol ratios (which already vary to a small degree at every pump). I think maybe adding some octane booster would be OK, though.
