Looking at the Hondata 93 Octane base tune, I can see they really targeted bulk torque at 3500rpm.

I'm here wondering if it would be prudent for a 'track spec' tune developed to smoothen out the spike, perhaps being a little more friendly on the motor and the cooling system and aim for area under the curve rather than peak numbers. I feel like the stock tune is already heaps for anything 3rd gear and under on track, especially without a proper clutch type LSD. Whats everyones opinions on this? Would love to hear our resident tuner's feedback too @Jester04 @Vito.FL5

So this is exactly what I’m testing, and trying to achieve just it will take me time since I want to try different strategies. You could decrease the boost through air charge to give less of a spike. But since this car really does not target a set amount of boost but rather torque you could tackle it a few ways. That way we can probably decrease the torque spike without really affecting power up top. I think the quickest way will be to use the boost by gear function.

Even on stock Hondata map boost it is not sustainable for track duty. Here is what happens to the fuel pump during that spike. It is for a very brief moment but it maxes it out and fuel pressure drops thus just dropping afr’s like crazy. It does recover quickly but you can see why these cars need a HPFP upgrade, I would go as far to say its pretty much mandatory for Type R’s that are modded just so everything is happy and under control. Took me a single log to agree with Hondata that the stock fuel pump is pretty maxed out from the factory as soon as you request a bit more boost.

Stock Honda map you mean?

Can definitely see the FP and resultant AFR drop there.

No that was a log on the Hondata map 93 oct and it only happens if you lug the engine for a clean one gear datalog. The custom map I’m working on got installed like an hour ago lol.

Yeah its not completed yet but testing out some stuff. So far it feels strong, its really impressive how much these k20C1’s pick up with little mods. I am still waiting on the downpipe to arrive. Once that gets here I will finish everything up.

Imma need that map!

In all seriousness though...I'd like to see more power and torque up top, and have that ferocious spike removed at 3500. The engine is rarely under 4,000 RPM's on a track, so I would see that 3500 spike as wasted potential that should me moved somewhere else.

I can adjust the torque spike but can’t really affect the powerband up top more than what is currently capable. To move a powerband like that you would need a different turbo or different cams something to alter the volumetric efficiency of the engine.

I think these would serve you well to move the powerband to the right:
