So I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not I want spacers or wheels with a wider offset due to the potential impact on the driving characteristics of the car. But now that honda is offering a +45 offset wheel, I feel a bit more comfortable going for it. is it safe to say the impact would be negligible if any at all? Especially given that most of the track builds I’ve seen even have wheels sitting flush with the fenders.
^this, doesn't matter if you add a spacer or buy wheels with a different offset, it'll impact roughly the same. It’s not the spacer itself that changes the handling characteristics of the car, it’s the change in effective offset that the spacer creates. In other words, the FL5 was designed and engineered for the OEM wheels and the OEM accessory wheels (forged alloy) with a +60 offset. A wheel with a different offset will effectively have the same effect as running a wheel spacer that replicates the same offset. So, in purely geometric terms, a wheel + spacer combination behaves the same as a wheel of the same effective offset.
That said, it isn't a big deal. I can't say it's not noticeable, but it's just... not a big deal. You get used to it after about a day of driving. In fact at this point, I just switched back to my OEM wheels for winter and there's a far bigger difference from changing tires than there is from changing offset IMO.
This coming from a guy who shared your exact sentiment. You can probably find words very similar to yours in my post history from about 18 months ago lol.
