If that's how you choose to conduct your affairs, that's fine. The statement, "You're not supposed to pay sales tax if you're buying a car out of state." is simply not accurate.
At the end of the day, the sales tax you pay goes to your state of residence, not who collects it from you. I think you're the same guy who called me out on the price I paid for my car. Posted it again to refresh your memory. If that wasn't you, then I apologize in advance.

Would it be unreasonable for me to ask if I can pay taxes directly to the DMV when I register the car, instead of to the dealership? Dealership wants to collect taxes at time of purchase.

You may not have a choice if you're buying in your state of residence. Even if you're buying out of state you may not have a choice if they ask you. I'm glad they agreed that I pay sales tax in TX.

it depends on the states laws. we use a service to collect tax / handle reg on every out of state deal that is financing with us. if youre paying cash its usually just us charging our local DMV fees & letting you leave on an in transit tag that gives you a few wks to go to your license agency/DMV to handle paying tax & registering the vehicle. the midwest is a diff animal and with you being so far away, its probably not an option to let the car leave without collecting tax. as far as your trade goes, check Autonation / Carvana / Carmax as i sold my GR to them this week for $3k more than the dealer offered me

That was me, and I didn't "call you out". Someone commented that it appeared you didn't pay Destination & Handling Fees. My response was essentially everyone pays it. You cannot get out of paying that fee. And again, that's true.

That's included in the $47,145 MSRP. At the end of the day, the OTD price is what matters. We can't help the sales tax we get charged where we live. The guys from CA are hit much harder than the rest of us. I think they're over 10%. Lucky for me it's only 6.25% in TX.

Is it still so hard to get MSRP that people are going several states away?

I need to buy in New England this July.

California Honda dealerships are damn greedy. I've put together a list of SoCal dealerships I've contacted about the Type R and if I was ever looking for a non-speciality Honda vehicle, I would never do business with them. Would much rather give my business to a dealership offering the vehicle that Honda priced it at.

One dealership in Cincinnati was charging MSRP, and one across town was charging 15k markup. I didn't mean to but actually lol'd at the sales guy I was talking to. I was looking for red specifically so I only called dealerships that had red and out of 12 only 1 was charging MSRP with no addons. That was in WI, MN, IL, OH, IN, MI.

I had this same experience - told the one with the markup that I had an MSRP offer and he couldnt have cared less. I am betting that someone did eventually pay that mark up but WHY when other dealers around Cincy are selling at MSRP. I got mine in Dayton.

Exactly, someone is still paying it. Another dealership said that a 15k markup was just a starting point. I told them my starting point was 20k under MSRP and they got all butt-hurt on the phone after that.

What dealership is asking doesn't mean what cars are selling for. Calling or sending emails your never going to get the price they will take.
I was literally told 20k ADM over the phone. This was in February last year. I bought the car for MSRP after 20 minutes of negotiation and my check placed on the managers desk.

Dealers only get 1 or 2 right? So all they need is to find one schmuck buying willing to pay markup and they make a nice profit. So I understand them not wanting to let go of their only car at MSRP.
