Reverse issues?

I tried to put the car in reverse and I see the backup camera. But for some reason it grinded and didn't move, so I had to put back in gear again and it worked... Is it just me or are these cars finicky with gear changes and such?

I've not had any issues with grinding with mine, though I only have about 380 miles on it so far. It's not uncommon for reverse to grind occasionally with some cars. I've had cars in the past where this would happen. If ever you feel a bit of resistance when trying to select reverse, try shifting into 6th then back to reverse. That usually does the trick.

I currently have like 630 miles. If anything I'll take it back to the dealer. The shifting is not that smooth for some reason. Like on and off?

Not all manual transmission have synchronizer in Reverse.

Make it a habit to go into the furthest gear away from Reverse, which is 1st gear for us, then go into Reverse. That way you will not grind going into Reverse at all.

As has been said, just make sure you have fully engaged the gear. When it doesn’t want to pop into gear, some refer to this as “lock-out” but that’s not actually what’s happening (not in cases like yours anyway). If it is not fully engaged, row the shifter up to another gear then back into reverse. This works almost every time. There’s nothing wrong with your shifter or transmission. It’s just the nature of it. Keep in mind your car is new. I’ve found that the finickiness and notchiness will improve with time and break-in. Better trans fluid, like Amsoil can improve things even further.

clutch all the way in, and make sure it goes all the way in before driving? I don't know lol

This is typical of Honda transmissions, either shift into first before going to reverse or pump the clutch twice.

I usually go to 4th first and then reveres and it goes in smooth all the time

Like others have said break in and a fluid change will help. The FL5 is the most finicky manual I've ever owner during break in(Sti, 370z nismo, Focus rs). After 2k miles and a fluid change to ravenol the shifts are ignorantly smooth.

This has happened to me thrice now. Reverse camera on and all. What folks are saying here might be right about the going into first before reverse. Might have to start doing that. Hope the trans is okay lol
