Thinking about tuning. Was curious as to how much power Can the diff handle before issues start.

At around 350whp, first and second gear are basically all wheel spin. no traction until I hit third. Even then, there’s still a bit of spin in third gear, and that’s with 265 wide RE-71RS tires. With that old tune, I could feel and hear the car struggling for grip after the apex; it just took time to settle in and hook up.

I spoke with my new tuner about going past 500whp, and he strongly recommended upgrading to an OS Giken LSD. You could try stepping up to a 275 wide, 200tw tire first, but my plan is to follow his advice and go with the OS Giken LSD and clutch next year.

If your goal is just straight line speed, drag racing this car from a dig is rough on the clutch and transmission, its better to do roll races. No matter what, a flash/protune won’t magically give you traction. The stock LSD is definitely better than having none, but the OS Giken is a big step up. just keep in mind it comes with some added noise. At the end of the day, it’s about picking your poison.

Hit @Jester04 for a tune and let him work his magic. We have been tuning my car for touge roads. I'm on 275 ps4s and the car is well over 400hp and tq. Even in 2nd gear on corners I can find traction. No clue how he does it probably because we been dialing it in for about a year lol

I've found tire traction is normally the weakest link, followed by the CV axles.
I imagine intense wheel hop could damage the axles or differential. Otherwise, without sticky sticky tires your not going to damage the differential. In RWD cars, it is not uncommon to put drag slicks on for the first time and then break the differential or axles. AWD cars destroy transmissions because they have traction.

Are LSD swaps at all common? I've heard many in the automotive media sing the praises of the stock LSD, but I've also never hit its limits with traction control off. I can't help but feel the traction control gives more issues with cornering than the LSD.

No drag racing. Just thinking of how it would pull out of corners with the extra power. Thanks for the replies.

I’ve never heard of anyone reporting issues with the diff. However you’ll want to be sure to utilize boost by gear and advanced traction control features as you begin to increase power output.

2025 CTR. Championship White.
From what I understand clutches hold up pretty well too..
A lot of cars have a well known "fuse". A weak link in the powertrain that needs to be addressed as mods / power (and especially torque) increase. Obviously the FWD nature of the Type R brings with it a fuse. Traction. Which is providing a buffer for the other components ?

I sold my 2004 Acura TL 6MT to my son, who subsequently stoplight drag raced it. The car had Pilot Supersport tires, which were grippy in warm weather and both CV axles gave out. The transmission, LSD, and clutch were still fine when he sold it at 200k miles. Luckily, CV axles were fairly cheap and easy to install.
I'm guessing the CTR would do about the same. However, I'm not selling this one.

No, it’s not common. I know a few FL5 owners who upgraded to aftermarket LSDs, but only after really pushing their cars on track. If you’re just doing roll races in a straight line, there’s not much benefit. On track, though, the stock LSD does show its limits, you’ll feel and hear it struggling in sharp turns after the apex. A mechanical LSD is ultimately superior to a helical LSD in terms of performance, but it’s something you really have to experience firsthand to fully understand."
