Our boy jonloov gonna have some sleepless nights coming up šŸ˜‚
Lol - test it - see the data results - so far the data is showing - better to use a cheap oil - change it more often vs. use an expensive oil and change it less often

I haven’t seen any meaningful difference between Mobil 1, Valvoline Full Synthetic, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, or AMSOIL Signature. I typically change my oil every 5–6 track days, and unless there’s solid, peer-reviewed data proving otherwise, I don’t believe the differences are significant enough to damage my engine, even with oil temps reaching the high 200s °F.

I’d even recommend that as long as you change your oil every 5–6 track days or within a 6-month span (whichever comes first), use a fully synthetic oil, stick with a 10W-30 or 10W-40 grade for better protection, and regularly check your oil levels, you should be perfectly fine. In fact, I’d just go with whichever is the cheapest among the ones I mentioned. They all perform about the same in my experience.

I’d still be interested to see the results if enough people were to test this properly, though it would take a lot of time and money to do it right.

I can get this at near cost from my guys at the dealership so when it becomes available I will be testing it.

You’re running 10W-30 and 10W-40 on track without overheating to 240F+ water temps?

What are your maximum coolant (water) temps and oil temps? What’s the ambient temperature? Are these 20–25 minute sessions? Is the engine/cooling stock or modified?

Please share data—ideally LogR screenshots showing max coolant temp with ambient temperature noted. Many thanks!

This was recorded today after 14 laps. The LOG R shows 82 F ambient temperature, 197 F water temp, and 231 F oil temp. Pay attention to the left-side gauge, it’s blinking, but it actually indicates 212 F. That’s the true temperature of the engine oil circulating through the oil cooler. I also have a WOT PWR triple pass radiator and a transmission oil cooler installed.

There was another guy at the track running a E85 tune but without as many cooling mods as I have. He said his oil temps were hitting the high 260s F

Thanks, that's great data and information. You have serious cooling. Confirms if you go to thicker oil, move up the cooling to complement. I'll test 0W-20 vs 5w-30 at COTA next week on completely stock car and record temps.

One quick question on oil consumption: did you notice any increase when moving to 10W-40 (or 10W-30)?
Lake mentioned thicker oils can raise consumption on tight-clearance engines because a thicker wall film is harder for the ring pack to clear, which can increase ring pull-over/PCV ingestion—especially at high piston speeds and G-loads. Curious what you’ve observed in top-ups per session/day (and catch-can volume, if fitted).

Has anyone actually used Phillips branded oil?

Doubt it, a part from the factory Honda race cars, I don't know a single person that has ever used this brand, never even seen it on a shelf or on any website that focus only on lubricants,
