I was planning on getting a set of enkei in the 18x9.5 range for track. And either v730 or Continental extreme contact force for tires. Trackdaytire.com has them on sale this weekend

The V730 after it's heat cycled a couple of times is a fantastic tire. I went for a ride with one of my buddies in the instructor group with his GTI and the V730's were spectacular! I'm thinking about grabbing a set myself!

The Dunlop Direzza Z3 is also in that range because it’s a close out price. I had asked about when it was manufactured because I was going to buy them from Tirerack. They were manufactured in 2022 according to Tirerack. I ran the Z2s on my S2000 before and thought they were very good except in the rain.

For a novice do you think the ps4s are fine or would you jump on 18" wheel tire combo? I'm eyeing a set of the v730 or ECF on sale at trackdaytire.com I'm trying to decide if the ps4s would be fun or frustrating. I'm also just considering a 300TW tire on 18" wheels.

I’ve run PS4S on 18” on my RX7 and 20” when I had my Porsche. They are more than fine for a novice. Learn the drive slow before you invest to drive fast. Invest in wheels when you know you want to keep at this. I have not tracked my FL5 yet but given my prior experience, I’d run them as an intermediate driver too.
I’d argue all day to learn how to drive to the limits on a lesser tire than to get overly confident on a tire that might be more than you need.

Nice video and lap. Glad to see you’ve slowed it down and gotten more “patient”. Chasing a lap time is always goal but this is hobby not a career. To your point, getting home safe i better than being the fastest guy.

BTW, Car and Driver turned its best lightning lap time at VIR in comfort suspension settings.

I disagree a little on the PS4. I find they talk when you want them to. They never let go without warning but I also always remember it’s a 300TW tire but a damn good one. I find after about 1.5 laps, they are good to go balls out, but after about 3-4 laps balls out, they do get greasy. For a tire that can pull street and track duty, I don’t think there is a better compromise. For as much as you go, the Kuhmos should be great. When I get a second set, that’s likely the tire I’ll run as well.

I love hearing the car ran great bone stock!

back straight you had a 20mph difference between this vid and your Jester Tuned lap record vid. 24 on the start/finish straight-ish, although this one looked like you lifted a bit? or was it the car not pulling anymore? pretty sure you lifted.. but it looked like you stayed in it for the whole back straight.

20 mph is a massive amount of power... you telling me theres 20mph in an intake/intercooler/exhaust and tune? or is there of a driving difference than I'm seeing on the back straight? I mean there's stickier tires, so you can get on power more aggressively, thats maybe 1-2 mph. you can brake later with stickier tires, but 20mph should more than make up for a stretched brake zone. On the vid brake point looks close but hard to tell from a vid.

long question short, are those 4 mods really worth 20 mph on that straight compared to stock or is ther something I'm missing?



ps. there's always gonna be haters, don't let them get to you. and remember, pros crash all the time. having a crash at the track doesn't make you any less. most of the haters have prolly never been on a track

Just looked back at my data. Top speed with the tune was on average 146, so only an 11 mph difference. I was doing a bit of lift and coast on the front straight, but only about 25 feet. The back straight I usually brake around the 2-3 marker. 11 mph is still a huge difference though!

If Michelin is ever looking for an ambassador for their PS4S, I will be nominating you. ?

I do agree that they are more than sufficient for a first time/novice driver. The learn what the car can do on a lesser tire seems to be the same advice I received eons ago when I first started autoxing. It makes sense to start with the 300 rated to a 200 rated to slicks.

I understand the 300 -> 200 --> semi-slicks idea. 300tw could really take a beating over a weekend. A session or two at the wrong pressures. Too heavy of inputs. Other general novice fails. I need these tires to drive home ?

Plus the stock ps4s are pricey.

They also slide, which would be less problematic with harnesses, but in the factory seat the G-force throws you around and makes counter steering a slide incredibly difficult.

It’s core exercise man. Don’t skip it.

HA! Looks like I had a massive brain fart… idk how I looked at 135 and then 145 and came up with 20… I was even doing the math in my head for my local track and going from 130 to 150 and still not connecting the dots… my bad…

and yes, 11mph is still a huge difference, but a little bit more inline with what is expect, if a bit on the high side, with those mods on a turbo car. But the 20 that was in my head was kinda blowing my mind

I’ve run 9 track days on my PS4s on my RX7. I run a pretty solid intermediate pace on them. I’m not as fast as @PointByPatrol at VIR but I also run a 30+ years old irreplaceable car with only ABS as a nanny so I’m also a bit more conservative on my driving style. When I had my Porsche, I ran 3 seconds faster on my 3rd lap on my first time out with it (it had less HP but a PDK). The 7 is not my daily but the tires have held up well.

If you can’t drive home on them, you’re doing something very wrong ?

And yes, they are def pricey. I haven’t even looked at the 19” size because I don’t wanna ?.
