I looked up on the Spoon filters after watching an unboxing and install video on it, which uses Sprint Filter's media. What I thought was interesting was one of the videos showed how easy it was for the media to be "see thru". I did performance air intake design for a while at GM Performance(GM Performance's C7 Corvette Performance intake was my project) so I had a bit of background for air filter and airbox design), so I was kinda curious on the media used on the Spoon one. Did some digging for the Sprint's media(which seems to be bigger in motorcycle world than cars), some venders are claiming 93% filtration efficiency for ISO dust > 80 microns. For OEM purpose most of the cars these days are closer to 98-99%. The media we used for the Vette was 97% and that required special buy off and because it was a sportscar, not a pickup truck, so its not expected to see use in dusty condition consistently, especially by people who would buy performance intake.
K&N claim their stuff usually in 96-98% and since their filters are oiled it heavily depends on how much you use the oil. But I'd believe their claim because they are actually really good at their jobs(GM uses their filter in OEM and performance parts application in the past).
In the process of developing my C7 design we've had filter material submission(different design since Sprint uses polyester or something thats not common) that looks like you can see thru them and the efficiency is really low(<85%), so I personally would feel kinda iffy using the Spoon filter. Also FYI, most filter gets better at filtering as it gets dirtier(dust plugs up the passage), at the expense of flow. So in this case I'd guess the cleaner the filter is the less of a filter it is, and its already not as big on being a filter.....there were also some threads on bike forum about seeing dust on the clean side of their airbox after using the Sprint filter...so kinda jive with the data here..
Just my 2 cents...especially for a $265 filter...
