Just installed my Spoon Sports Progressive springs with my father-in-law. At first it didn't look much lower, and there wasn't noticeable difference in the ride. After about a week, the springs settled and the ride was more bouncy in R+ mode. I typically drive in Comfort as I enjoy the difference when I switch it to R+ mode, and now that difference is much more noticeable with the Spoon springs.

The install was a bit of a bitch. I think we got the rears done in under an hour, but the front was another beast. We watched all the top youtube videos and started with the driver side. One mistake was loosening the tower nuts as it lowered the strut into the knuckle that it needs to be removed from. Every millimeter counted here, so we ended up disconnecting the sway bar end links to add some play to both sides of the axle.

We didn't have a knuckle spreader, so we had to pry the strut up out of the knuckle while shimmying the top of the rotor to work the strut up. Another trick was to place the strut bolt back in after it was lifted to prevent it from sinking into the knuckle while also providing a pry point.

Finally, I wanted to see how much we could gain by tightening those tower nuts to lift the strut and sure enough it cleared just enough to be pulled out.

We thought it was smooth sailing from here, but somehow the passenger side was even worse. I thought I was gonna have to leave the OEM spring in at one point and drive it over to a shop lol. After much persistence, I don't even know what we did differently, my wife came out to check on us as it was dinner time, and the strut popped out.

Long story short, it's not a terribly difficult job, but have a knuckle spreader handy. 80% of it was dealing with that.

In the pics, I was measuring for negative rake using a level against the underside of the frame (after verifying my garage is also level lol) and it looks to be good. Spoon fixed this issue apparently, I'm curious if anyone has updated their springs or noticed any negative rake even with their new replacements.

Anyway, spacers are next. Also, I'm new here and wanted to say hello! This car is absolutely perfect in every way and the first truly addictive driving experience of any vehicle I've owned.

I want to do more mods, but unfortunately I'm in California AND under warranty, but as-is I never stop finding reasons to go for a drive.

Cheers!

Edit: Some other notes

-I chopped the last rib of the bump stops
-We backed the axle nut off the passenger side, re-torqued it to 242 ft lbs
-Wheel lugs on the FL5 are 94 ft lbs apparently (not 80 like non-Type R models)
-The axle popped out on the driver's side, but it was easy to pop back in

Other mods:
-PRL HVI

Planned mods:
-25mm x 20mm spacers
-Mid Resonator delete
-Open middle exhaust valve

Can you please measure the distance from the top of the wheel arch to the ground for front and rear? I’m curious. Also a side profile photo showing the entire car in the daylight will show if the reverse looks fixed visually. Looks great from what I see! Thanks for the write up.

Thanks! I just got the mid resonator removed and posted some sound comparison clips on youtube:

Front is a hair over 25 1/2" and the rear just under 25 3/4" . Is this the actual rake measurement? Rear arch is about an eighth to a sixteenth inch higher.

How are you liking the ride compared to stock ?
I did already do the ADS Swap and very very happy with the results .

This made me laugh

Glad you got it sorted out. I had Spoon springs and I sold them. I never installed them. After reading up on the headaches people have gone through, I decided to enjoy my R as-is. I have the Spoon rear sway bar on order and that's probably the only suspension mod my car will have. I also have the Spoon rigid collars, but I'm also on the fence about that.

Not to ping an older thread, but I'm looking to DIY the exact same install as well. Have a knuckle spreader form the VW days, but was wondering if you had issues with your CV boot? I hear they tear easily if done the wrong way on the FL5

I had mine done at a very reputable shop that did many FL5’s so no issues here .

Getting reminded of the install process is giving me nightmares. I would seriously consider just paying a shop to get it done if you are not too experienced working on a car.

I personally didn't pop the axle or had cv boot issues. Even worse I somehow managed to snap one of the front sway bar end links
