EA888.3 and above are phenomenal engines but the level of complication is insidious.
  • Constant water pump issues.
  • Ground issues
  • Intake valves gumming
  • PCV system can’t handle track work
  • Numerous coolant actuators that randomly fail
  • Oil/water exchanger that can fai
  • Mystery gremlins

I am building one as a disposable Hpde machine. They make great power and efficiency but it’s nowhere near as issue free as a k20C1. They also have cooling issues on track.

To be fair every piece of shit 4 banger with a turbo has shit cooling in a track environment

the water pump issues are a thing. There’s aftermarket ones that don’t have issues at all thankfully

never heard of ground issues ever

the intake valve thing was semi solved with the mk7’s. Instead of having to walnut blast every 4-6 years it’s about 10-14. Not great but an improvement till U slot in port injection

pcv can absolutely handle it. But here’s a tip. Do not change the inlet. Don’t change the inlet and the damn pcv will literally be fine.

I dunno what a coolant actuator is and I’ve never heard of them failing.

never heard of any of the water to air exchangers ever failing. It’s so small and simple looking. I don’t see how they could even. Tho I’m sure the hoses that lead to and from them will eventually dry rot tho.

gremlins. Yes. 300%. Germans do be gremlining. Holy fuck they do sometimes. Especially when your battery’s voltage is low. Everything kinda freaks out.

as a complete package. The type r and type s are just way better cars. And way way better balanced. The GTI and golf r only have two mechanical advantages. The dual clutch transmission and a semi built engine from the factory. That’s it.

I misspoke. I meant to say the factory transmission cooler, lil sandwich plate on top of the DSG.

I do agree with your assessment. I was trying to list out some of the mystery gremlins I’ve heard of / encountered.

My favourite one is the coolant displacement. The coolant slips passed the coolant level sensor, is wicked in the wiring harness, then floods the ECU, gauge clusters, and everything

Hey guys, didn't know if this was in the right thread or not.

So i saw a facebook post about remote jailbreak on the fl5. They were advertising that Serge Bo (upon some research, big tuner for honda's) can remotely jailbreak the ECU. Just wanted to see if it was legit. Would make my life much easier not having to ship out the ECU and be down for a few days.

Thanks!
I just got my FL5 ECU unlocked by Serge. I was skeptical about it but I bit bullet and went with his service. Everything went well. Works as advertised. Good dude to work with and it was easy. He is legit. If you have any questions. You can dm on IG: @aria.fl5.671

jumping into this thread late but forgive my lack of understanding on this topic:

Didn't Hondata offer remote jailbreak on the FK8? Why don't they offer that on the FL5?
