I know that Honda does this from the factory for the ITS, but they don't do it for the type R. TSP asked if I wanted to do that, and I'm just curious if you guys think running TSB tune with crackles is safe?

It's relatively safe, but there's some general caveats that come with pop and bangs tunes.

First off, I believe the its doesn't have a second resonator or muffler (or some other sound dampening part) like the FL5. So the sound it produces is gonna sound different by default.

As for the burble tune, I don't know how exactly tsp is achieving it, but most of those tunes involve retarding timing on the engine (late ignition) to burn small amounts of fuel at low throttle demand. There's inherent risk in this in that it can cause build-up on your catalytic converter over time (or if it gets hot enough, melt them altogether), but you'd have to be in a very particular use cases to do those (which funnily enough was me a few months back via bad gas).

I think perfectly fine, just don't be upset if you do burn out a cat.

Hondata has implemented the exact same strategy as Acura for the Integra Type S, which includes a long list of safe guards - So many that ITS owners will have their pops/bangs temporarily cease and then sort of freak out about it. It has created a headache for dealers (and tuners) it seems. 😬

All that being said, this implementation is safe. Hondata does give you the option to exaggerate the pops and bangs and at some point - too much is likely unsafe. However, the only option we include for our TSP tune is the factory Integra Type S implementation.

So essentially I can run the crackle on my TSP stage 1 tune and it wont cause any issues ever. Just like the stock ITS?

Yes, that is my expectation. One thing Honda, Acura, and any OEM won’t risk is an issue with an emissions system. If they thought the catalytic converter, the key emissions device, was at risk due to their implementation of this system - they would have never allowed it.
