You nerd! LOL!

It’s ok to say your broke and can’t afford shoes after the crazy ADM’s on buying these things. I still have my shoes but I can only afford shorts and it’s the middle of winter up here!

?
No joke...I'll be broke AF till I get some tax refund later this year :)

For what it’s worth my Honda tech told me it’s a mistake to do your first oil change too early. I didn’t ask why but he said I should do it at about 4000km.
Just do it when the onboard computer tells you. Honda engineers know a few things.. Idk why these forums love to over complicate the most simple things lol

Yep learned that lesson with my GT350, I swear the lengths that some people go is really ridiculous, at the end of the day its just a car lol. My buddy is a mechanic too.

The whole changing your oil thing isnt necessary at all, older engines needed it but now with the way modern oil is made and the fact that the drain plugs are literally magnetic to filter out the metallic shavings, its just a placebo and pseudoscience.

The engines have been out for some time now and are extremely reliable. Your engine isn't going to blow up if you don't get it changed at 1,000 miles. Only reason why you should get it done at around 4000km is because if you drive the car hard regularly the engine quality decreases. 3,000 miles is a good interval for aggressive driving.

With hard driving the computer should tell you to change it earlier. But yeah if i was tracking or autocrossing that would be my only reason to change early.

I don’t think the plugs are magnetic on the civic. But I would imagine after 1000 miles it should be broke in.

I was planning on breaking in till 1k then changing oil and filter. I’m at 860 now. Getting close ?. I plan on using Castrol Edge. Supposedly Honda has a contract with Castrol. They use Castrol Edge in their race cars. And I plan on using a purilator boss filter. Anybody else use these?
i'll be going with redline 5w-30, much better protection

i remember swapping to 5w-30 in my fk8 was the best thing i ever did, especially in florida...you could just tell on the hot summer days the car ran so much better

How many miles did you break in your fk8?

Lol you gave in to temptation ?
these motors were built to be thrashed...racked up 24k HARD miles on that car in 1 year and never did it give me one issue. oil changed every 5k with amsoil or redline 5w-30, car was bulletproof. never even ran one of those silly oil catch cans either.

The dealership I'm at has never seen any verifiable difference in engine life between a FK8 that was beat on right out of the gate versus one that was driven softly for the first few hundred miles.

The difference has always been in how well the car was maintained.

Interesting tip from that Honda tech...maybe something to do with a special break-in oil used?

I agree. Whenever the subject of oil comes up, there always seems to be a lot of brand-loyalty, placebo and psuedo-science like you stated.

If they really wanted to see a quantifiable, measurable difference in different oils and oil change intervals, they would send their used oil in for analysis.

Here is what the 2023 Civic Hatchback Owner's Manual found on the Honda owners website says about break-in...

Page 502:
During the first 600 miles (1,000 km) of operation, avoid sudden acceleration or full throttle operation so as not to damage the engine or powertrain.

Page 503:
Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles (300 km) after purchasing your new vehicle or replacing the brake pads or rotors, to allow for proper break-in.

Very generic, so break-in is likely not a Honda concern.
