While driving today I noticed this noise when the windows are down. I can’t tell what’s causing it or from where.

I listened to that with headphones and I still can't hear any squealing sound.
I wouldn’t call it’s a squeal per se, what it’s definitely a high pitched sound as soon as I let off the accelerator.

Update:

I just went out for a drive and went around 40mph noticed the sound got louder. I also noticed that if I put the car in neutral the sound goes away. If I engage the gear again then I hear it again.

That's exactly what it is then. Wastegate rattle. It's totally normal.

You have a few options:
  • Learn to live with it.
  • Drive with your windows up.
  • Keep your foot on the throttle slightly when in gear.
  • Trade the car in for something naturally aspirated.

Just noticed the same noise yesterday, was concerned it had to do with the sprint filter I put in or worse. Never heard this in any other turbo car I’ve had before, glad to hear it’s normal apparently

What’s funny to me is that I’d say I’m sensitive to rattles, but the wastegate doesn’t bother me at all. I think there’s a few factors to that, though : 1. It is part of the normal engine noise (for this car and apparently some other makes/models). 2. I don’t tend to drive with my windows down. 3. Maybe mine isn’t as loud as others’, though I doubt it.

Roll with it. It’s just a minor quirk of the car…and it’s a GREAT car. If anything, maybe install a louder exhaust.?

Would it help if a silicone sleeve of appropriate diameter was installed snugly over the joints of the wastegate actuator?

I'm assuming this image is that actuator (but this photo is from the FK8 engine).

None of these are really acceptable options, but I take particular issue with suggesting it's a universal problem associated with all turbo cars.

Don't kid yourself, this shit is exclusive to this platform.

Also- I'm starting to wonder if the noises my car is making is actually related to the wastegate. It's just too loud in my car, 100% noticeable with the windows up AND radio on, not only because I can still hear it but I can feel it in my foot and sometimes feels like the whole damn cabin is vibrating. My intuition really wants to attribute it to being drivetrain related. I'm going to get it into the dealer and have them tell me it's normal and have it documented for posterity that I thought it was wrong.

This noise is the #1 issue I have with this car. I noticed it within the first few days of owning it, thought it got better or my mind tuned it out but now that I'm driving the car more with spring here, it's continuing to annoy the shit out of me.

I thought multiple people reported that the electronic wastegate noise was on most turbo BMW engines as well?

This particular engine vibrates a lot. Especially in certain RPM ranges. They removed the balance shafts so this will be worse than any other 2.0L turbo Honda engine.

I’ve found the vibration is worse when the AC is on. Comfort mode makes it vibrate less through the pedal but that’s no fun!

I think I can correlate your A/C suggestion, I'll try to give that a shot... but my local climate with its stifling humidity means the A/C is definitely on more often than not. Comfort mode also makes sense- I spent almost 100% of the time over the winter driving this thing in Comfort mode maybe that's why I've noticed it more recently where I default to Individual more often, where I have the engine in Sport+.

As for other turbo engines, I've had my share, including BMW. I've had an N55 (e92 335i) and S55 (f82 m4) for long periods of time. Never noticed anything like this (the N55 made a lot of noises though...). I've also had the VAG 2.9L V6 in both an RS5 and a Macan GTS, 2.0L turbo in an Audi S3, 3.0L turbo in both an S4 and Macan S, 3.0L flat 6 turbo in a 991.2, and the 2.5L Turbo in a 718 GTS- no such noises.

So maybe there is another platform that makes this noise, but it definitely is not just "a modern turbo thing"...
