For my first event I ran a Performance Friction pad on the front and had terrible brake shake. So bad that I thought I had a wheel coming loose. Swapped back to the stock pads to finish the weekend. The next time I took it out I put on Hawk endurance pads and no more issues. I still don’t know what caused it but the car definitely didn’t like the Performance Friction pads.Hey everyone, first time at the track this past weekend and only now getting to posting about it.
As background, I picked up my type R in early April and broke it in fairly easily. I’m used to German cars, so I just paid for the 1000mi oil change and drove it straight to the track. I come from a long line of M3s (e46/92/f80) and have a cayman. I’m a quick, but not outright fast driver. I’ve done a 1.41 at Laguna, 2.02 at Buttonwillow, and 2.08 at Thunderhill East with my cayman on stock PS4s.
First impressions of the FL5 on thunderhill East is that it’s a very capable car - my apex speeds are within 2/3 mph of the cayman, but I’m losing close to 10mph on the straights. I’m still getting used to how to drive FWD, but I have to get more used to how more power isn’t going to rotate me through the corner and actually backing off slightly gets me through better. Diff does an incredible job pulling you out though, it’s a very different feeling. Ended up the day with a 2.18, which is around 10 seconds off my PB, but to be expected given that it’s a new platform to me.
One thing I wanted to ask people here is if anyone else has had brake system warning lights? I got a feeling that I had warped my rotors because I got huge judder under braking after about two hot laps, and the light came on, but I did a cool down lap and it mostly went away along with the light. I’m guessing I got pad compound stuck to the rotor and I boiled my fluid, but I’m running Castrol SRF with a project Mu club racer pads (excellent bite, huge amount of stopping force).
In any case, the car was fun and I’m looking forward to tracking it more - Laguna next month.
I’m using the same brake and fluid combo.Hey everyone, first time at the track this past weekend and only now getting to posting about it.

I'm taking my FL5 to the track for the first time next week! Can't wait! I tracked my previous car a lot so I'm looking forward to the experience with this one.Let's see some track videos guys! I can't be the only one that's done track days this year!
Will you be at Palmer on May 5th?I will be at the track in a couple weeks. Palmer. Maybe will squeeze in lime rock a week before which is my home track but not sure I have time to get fluid and pads done before then. Be nice to do lime rock since I have been there a lot and be a nice comparison with old car.
Yes, going to Putnam Park with the Central Indiana Region Porsche Club!Putnam park @Pwalker1130 ? I couldn't make that event work with my schedule sadly. Hopefully the next one!
yep. you? Will you be at Palmer on May 5th?
Cool. I’ll see you there. I think it would be my 5th time at Palmer. I believe I’ve ran it CCW before.yep. you?
