Quick update, drove from Dallas to Austin maybe longest road trip I’ve ever had, on cup 2s and zero tinnitus. The roads are much rougher here and I thought for sure it was gonna be too too much but actually the sound insulation worked really well.

another massive bonus was that the car seems to stay cooler in the hot sun because the doors are so insulated.

Also, I’m not really seeing any weight penalty. The only production cars that did a lot better at COTA circuit of the America, were the GT3 RS and GT4 RS. Type R did insanely well.

I thought these camber plates - ball joints to help camber would increase road noise, but luckily they did not.

enjoy your sound
insulation deadening without any regret of weight penalty.

Not sure if I shared this, but you may find it helpful, I deployed similar strategies. The civic also has a flap to allow air pressure to equalize.

I put open cell foam around that flap

I used products from resonixsoundsolutions.com for my hatch area and rear doors, and it made a noticeable difference. The midbass tightened up, and road noise dropped quite a bit, especially on rough pavement. It’s not crazy expensive if you focus on key spots like wheel wells and trunk. Their site has a bunch of info if you’re unsure where to start or how much material you’ll need.

I noticed a big difference after doing the rear doors and trunk area....road noise dropped a lot on the highway. Took a full weekend but it was totally worth the time.
yes the rear wheel arches are the only wheel arches in the cabin. Be sure to really blanket all the way around the rear wheel wheels inside all the way up and around the rear passenger airbags. Doing a proper complete job, it’s important. You don’t want to waste your time like I did going back and realizing you should have done it right ;). Sound escapes easily

What materials did you use?

That 4c sounded like a torture chamber lol, hearing is extremely difficult to return. You mention earplugs but what about noise canceling ear buds?

If my intent is to drive over 1 hour anywhere I will put them on. On more quieter machines I'll put them on between the 15-30 minute mark of the trip.

Driving to track is ear buds. On track foam plugs under helmet.

unfortunately noise cancellation is even worse.. there are lots of people on Reddit that talk about this as it’s constantly working out your eardrum canceling sound. You have the perception it’s working, but actually it’s simply making it worse, as it’s constantly trying to produce the opposite wave and your ear drums are in the crossfire. Luckily over years after the 4c my tinnitus got better, but it can be triggered with continuous sustained noise with high decibels. Thank god the sound deadening project worked or would have had to sell the car.

Whoa, interesting. I've been wearing noise canceling ear buds for nearly a decade now. My ears feel ok and I too have had tinnitus that dissipated over time since then. It seems to be working as I am less fatigued and ear blasted/talking at a regular volume.

Nonetheless I'll start a form of sound deadening process on this car soon.

I used Amazon Basics sound deadening on the fenders, outer door panels, and spare tire well.
Definite improvement, but no Lexus. High pitch tire hiss is gone, but low pitch rumble remains. I'm not willing to add further deadening, as we drive another, quieter car on longer trips.

I’m planning to do a little treatment soon. I’ve got 10 square feet (about 7 lbs total) of Damplifier pro to put on the door skins and some in the rear. I also bought 50 square feet of 3M sound absorbing material to hopefully fit behind the door cards, and the rest will go in back. The 3M material only weighs 0.1 lb per square foot.

I used 45 sqft, which was 25 lb of the Amazon Basics material.
Another thing I note: When the doors are closed, they sound like an S class Mercedes vs. a typical Japanese sedan.
I recented rented a 2025 Camry on vacation and it was very tinny compared to my CTR.

Big shout out to op and Johnloov for this thread. I am sound deadening my type r after experiencing some very bad highway roads on a CA to Vegas trip and this info is very helpful. Just finished trunk, backseat and rear wheel wells. Doors are next! I come from owning a few amgs prior to this and miss that vault feeling. Although the type r is an amazing car... I think Honda could've done a bit more to combat road noise while maintaining a lightweight chassis. But its still a Honda so I get it. So far worth it after some back stretches, Cheers.
