Glad to see my findings validated. I cross shopped my DE5/FL5 with the GRC and I thought the same. The biggest thing that swayed me though was the room in the backseat which is no bueno for two carseats.
Yeah I don’t see the GR as a good family car, the type R has a ton more room.

That’s the reason I didn’t even bother to try to find one to test drive. Seeing one in the other direction in traffic, I swear it looked barely longer than my 19 Si coupe. 2 teenagers and a car seat. I was very impressed with room in the backseat.

I can support your assessments, car has very little backroom and the trunk is tiny. The Type R is more useable for daily activities.

So far enjoying the car and it is fun to drive. It does have some certain kind of old school charm to it. Gas mileage is not great either but comparable to the type R.

I concur. I too have both a FL5 and GRC. The GRC is a hoot to drive. Much more mechanical feeling. Reminds me of my old STIs. It has a very different feel than the FL5, which is good because I still appreciate how amazing the FL5 is anytime I drive it. The cargo space is terrible. I ended up buying a roof box for times when I might use it to travel.
