Are there any mtf that Honda technically allows other then oem? Like is there a certain set of parameters that if met you can use it and Honda doesn’t have fuel to void a warranty claim?

As long as it is MTF, the correct viscosity, and the correct amount, it should be fine. I don’t see how Honda would have any grounds to void a warranty claim unless incorrect fluid is used.

Note : Some products may not be API certified. Could Honda question that in a warranty claim? Yes, possibly. The difficulty would be proving that the fluid caused the problem. Keep in mind that none of the brands listed would be in business if they didn’t meet industry standards (at minimum). If the lack of API certification is something you think you might lose sleep over, just stick with Honda MTF or another like GM Sychromesh. It’s similar to Top Tier fuel. It’s comforting knowing that the fuel meets a certain standard, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that non-Top Tier (BP for example) is garbage.

Running motul gear 300 here. Starting to get cold outside I'll see how it responds ?

Honda MTF 3 is a 75w80 gear oil. Gear oil is just tested differently from engine oil so a 75w80 is similar to a 10w30 motor oil. 75w90 is very similar to Honda's spec weight.

I may easily be wrong, but I think there are other differences, right? The chemical makeup of engine oils and gear oils are surely different, which makes sense. They’re used in very different environments and put up with different stressors. I think you could use motor oil in the trans in a pinch, but I’d definitely not use gear oil in the motor, simply because I don’t believe gear oil is made to handle the high heat / high stress environment of the engine. Both oils may even react differently to the metals in either case too. I’m not sure.

100%. I was just referring to the stated viscosity differences (75w80 vs 10w30) Very different additives and 2 very different workloads imo between the 2. I would not run motor oil for very long in the transmission.

Got it. Thank you. I just wanted to be sure my understanding of the oils was, at least, mostly correct.?

I agree. If one had to use motor oil in the trans, for some reason, it’d be best to swap it out for proper gear oil ASAP due to the whole different metals + different environment + different chemical makeup-up situation.

I use Cusco's 80W-90 gear oil; it provides excellent lubrication for the transmission and LSD, delivering a silky-smooth performance.
