rained all day yesterday. now it's 90% humidity, 28 degrees.

It’s the steering rack. Seems the recall broke it and made it have excessive play. Regret ever getting the recall done.

now i’m waiting for an adjuster to come out from my extended warranty company.

EXACT Same scenario on my end. I encountered one or two posts somewhere on here stating that all other Hondas get the recall and that’s it. But apparently the type R must have the recall done in a new steering rack put in.

The only explanation I can come up with currently is that the tech dosent know both have to be done (if true) and that recall done by itself is what is leading to our issues. But that’s just what I’m surmising from the information I have.

Did they say when they would be able to get you a new rack and when it may be done?

well, I have an Si. But i had the rack replaced at 18k miles. Maybe the new rack they installed at 18k miles already had the "updated" parts and when they performed the recall it messed up the clearances. You would think Honda would confirm the steering rack part number before doing the recall...

or it's just a stupid bandaid fix to prevent it from binding and the excessive play is just a side effect of that. what a shitshow. I mean, Hondas have had EPS racks for a while now with no major issues. Why is it so hard to make a reliable rack now?

real glad i bought an extended warranty.

they filed a claim with my extended warranty company but, of course, they want to send an adjuster out for whatever reason. So, I have to wait 24-48 hours for that to happen.

I use to drive a Big Rig in Oregon during all seasons which is mostly rain and black ice or occasionally snow with layers of ice. Don’t miss it and hope you had a safe trip to the dealer and fix the issue.
You definitely made my heart pitter patter thinking about your drive conditions as Joe with Raiti’s Rides would say 😆

Right? My dealer has been good to me and is taking it seriously but this is why I avoid them if I can and further reinforces my feelings.

Supposedly they can have a new rack in tomorrow if it’s needed but we’ll see. I’ll update as I go along this arduous process. Sending you good luck and energy, neighbor.

I've had the clunk since day one and had it up on th lift at a friend's house. We turned off the car and moved the wheels that way (ie: no power steering) and were able to isolate it to the universal joints. The thing is my car always had that noise and it seems a lotta people's type Rs also have. That same friend also has a crv with the same clunk, so I've been left to believe it's normal.

In either case, the car drives perfectly fine, so I'd rather not have some Honda tech go on there and loosen all the bolts and make the tolerances worse on the car. The way I see it, anyone meddling with the car that's not me is probably gonna make it worse.

Really sorry this happened to you @cryptolime, hopefully this time it'll be done for good
