I’m in the game now too, took it in for the damn recall and a day later I’ve got a clunk while in the parking lot. 😒 this is while I swear I hate dealers.
I had a 2024 I didn’t want to take in for the recall for that reason it was fine though and why I didn’t want to take it in. I ended up trading it in for 25 type r 😂
But also because I wanted the Championship White lol. My 24 although only 4300 miles but a year and a half old was lowered on spoon Springs and no issues so I don’t know. I drove it hard enjoyed it but didn’t beat on it and also broke it in faithfully and by a little luck haven’t ran over or hit anything.
Btw sorry about that issue your having and others on this thread as I knock on wood :)
Think I’m not going to push my luck though and leave this one stock especially for any issues that may occur.

Update: took the car back this morning, shop foreman took me under the car and showed me play in, you guessed it, the steering rack. It’s up on the lift until it can be further looked at on Monday. I’m pretty disappointed that the car seems fine in this area before the recall, now it’s having this problem, not sure how this even happens.

Regardless I’m hoping we don’t have to keep replacing the rack, steering felt a lot lighter after the recall as well. I understand that lightening the steering was the point but now I feel it’s somewhat vague.

Super disappointed in Honda right now, really looking for some reassurance. Anyone else have any insights?

mine's the same way. i grabbed the outer tie rod and twisted it and could here the same clunking noise i hear when rapidly turning the wheel back and forth. so, i hope that's the culprit. seems normal since it's done it since new. But gotten a bit louder lately. makes sense with 70k miles of wear on the tie rods.

Yours has 70k on it? That’s impressive. What’s your play here? I’m not by any mean a mechanic but I’m trying to figure whats the best move here so I’m gathering a lot of opinions and asking other people their experiences.

Unrelated but it looks as though you’re not far from me, so hey neighbor :)

nice. hello neighbor!

i think the clunking when turning while stationary is normal because I've seen/read of the same thing happening with 5-6 other people on forums/reddit. Doesn't seem to be any lateral play in the tie rod. It's just rotating and bottoming out on itself when rapidly turning the wheel.

are you sure the play is in the actual steering rack? Is there play in the wheel when you turning while driving? I know some play while stationary is normal due to the way the EPS gearbox works.

what I can tell you is that when we went in the shop and went under the car he had me place my hands on the tie rods while he moved the wheels left to right. They shifted about 1 inch in either direction making the same noise I heard when shifting the sheeting wheel left to right in the cabin.

i don't think it's an issue as long as there's no slop while moving

I feel like I can hear it when going over bumps as well, I’m not sure how that is not an issue, so forgive my ignorance.

I did not have this issue or the noise before doing the work gear recall, and now I’m starting to regret doing it to begin with.

damn, is there any way they can undo the recall? mine feels looser too after getting it done
don't want to pay $4k for a new rack. already had it replaced once.

I thought about asking that as well but I doubt it due to “legal / lability reasons”; I’m really struggling to figure out how this recall broke the steering rack essentially.

the only reason I did the recall was I believed I experienced some jolting at the wheel last weekend over choppy pavement at highway speeds. Car needed new tires and pads so I had them do the recall as well while it was in.
Steering felt immediately lighter and 24 hours later I thought I heard some sound while going over bumps but couldn’t make it out over the buzz this car produces.

confirmed it shortly thereafter in a parking lot while grabbing a pizza. Sat down, tugged at the wheel to get acquainted and heard it clear as day. It’s faint, but absolutely there.

could you take a video of the sound? I want to see if it sounds like mine. I wonder if they didn't tighten the subframe brace bolts or tie rods when doing the recall.

I can’t as I left the car and took a loaner. But I went through your profile and found your video, it’s the same sound.
Wasn’t there before the recall, and steering feel is really vague.

so that noise is just from me twisting the outer tie rod. it's not from the steering rack. it also did it when new but to a lesser extent. I think they are just a bit worn.

try it when you get a chance.

foreman took me under the car, had me place my hands on the tie rod as he moved the wheel left and right and it wiggled the same amount and made nearly the same sound.
