I’ve been noticing that my car is always covered in tiny metallic flakes. I see them on the door sills and on the flat surface of the rear bumper mostly. I just did a minor paint correction on the car, so of course I’ve been walking around it and looking more closely at the paint. This morning I really noticed the shiny little flecks all over! I’ve never seen this on any other car. Anyone else have this going on? Is it from the brake pads maybe?

Are you talking about iron fallout? If so, thats extremely common especially on dustier pads (or environment you're driving in).

You need to do a decon and use an iron remover like gtechniq w6 iron remover (safe for paint). Its also common to have iron remover chemicals in wheel specific cleaners for this reason.

I am aware of iron fallout, and the decon chemicals. I don’t think this is just ordinary fallout. It’s everywhere after 40 miles of driving. I just ran a magnet over some of the particles and they didn’t move, so I guess it’s aluminum? I can’t imagine it’s stainless steel.
I’m going with alien space dust.

What color is the car? I have a BBP and can see some dust and other airborne stuff on the car from just sitting in the garage with the door open. I'm assuming some colors will show a lot more particulate than others.

SGP, so fairly light colored. I’m going to give it a good bath this weekend and closely monitor where the flakes start showing up first.

Do you happen to live or work in a industrial or manufacturing area?

I used to buy steel for a large Seattle steel shredder. We also processed lots of aluminum and other non ferrous metals and our cars were always covered in exactly what you described.

No, my area is pretty rural.

Have pictures? You sure it's metal, because silica dust glitters to. Usually found in areas with fine sand like beaches, quarries, or recent landscapping/construction.

Iron. Probably. Get iron remover. If the flakes turn color, you are good to go. With Iron removed. Then clay bar. Then polish. Then ceramic coat.
