Do you need a Honda scan tool to change rear brake pads in a 2023 Type R?

No, you should be able to swap them out. Switched over to ceramic pads and had no problems with the system. What is it telling you?

Search Youtube videos for instructions on putting it into maintenance mode. I saw some videos for older cars but not sure if they apply. If none of those work then you might need a good scan tool with bidirectional capabilities. Not necessarily a Honda scan tool. We use Autel at work and it's never had an issue with putting a car into maintenance mode.

Why do you have to go into maintenance mode again? Is it so that you can apply brake pressure via the app instead of toggling the ebrake switch?

Three options here:

1- remove the e brake motor, 2 screws and it wiggles off, then use a E torq socket on the back of the caliper to wind caliper in by hand, then depress the piston with a clamp or pliers

2- disconnect coupler and apply power and ground to the motor to wind it fully in, it's only 2 pins, if it's backwards it will wind out and tighten, just reverse the leads

3- use a scan tool. I have an Autel mx808, push of a button to go into or out of maint mode. It was about $350, I recommend Techs choicetools, it comes with 1 year of free updates.

Hey with Amazon prime day going on, do you know the specific model name for Tech ChoiceTools that you are recommending? Im not familiar with their offerings.

I honestly don't know about scanners for putting the E-brake into maintenance mode, I have a scanner myself but its just to read CELs, and check the battery and alternator. Seems like I need something more advanced

I bought an Autel MaxiPRO MP808S, it's way overkill for this car. I would just look for an Autel product that says it can do brake maintenance and ABS bleeding.

If you do swap pads with the manual way of retracting the parking brake - do you need to replace the bolts and seal for the parking brake? If so, what are those part numbers?
