So I'm planning to upgrade my drivers seat this year. Like a lot of people my weight fluctuates. I go from 32-34 and truthfully I'm probably a 30.
I definitely need to upgrade the drivers seat something that holds better and weight savings is always a good thing.
Don't drive my car much right now however road trips and thinking about doing a track day or two in the future.
What factors do y'all consider when picking up a new seat. How do you go about deciding what seat to purchase.
I'm thinking about reclining bucket might be the move however I really don't get to drive the car much.
Let's get some options or examples of how and why you upgrade your seat.

On the type R I would not do a reclining bucket, I would go fixed back all the way. On a coupe I understand why peple do fixed back so they can still access the back seat but if you gonna go bucket fixed back is the move, get all the goodness from having the bucket.

As far as sizing goes, bucket seats seem to be made in mind for people that shop at baby gap lol, they are all so damn small. Your waist is not really that big and even at 34 you could still probably fit in a nice recaro pole position, recaro also makes a bigger version of the pole position. All the mugen stuff looks super small to me though, maybe a leg of mine would fit, maybe. Also why too expensive, just get a pole position which is excellent and made by recaro just like the mugen stuff, it will just not have the ugly cartoon on it (why do people like that ugly mugen ball logo cartoon?)

Now the thing people don't talk about buckets enough. Just like putting a wheel with no airbag in the car a bucket seat is not really safe with a 3 point belt, you need to have the seat belt receive close to you body so that it can tighten properly, a lot of these buckets the hole for the belt is for a harness so the belt receive can't properly fit, some it fits but it will jam against your leg. You could use a seat belt extender which maybe fine. Its a shame that recaro does not make a seat like they did for the BMW GTS, or a seat like the porche gt cars that has a place where the 3 point belt receiver can be in the correct place

The only seat I would consider (and I almost bought it for my bmw m2) is the cobra nogaro. It won't have as much side bolstering (still will have way more than the stock seats) but it is made to be used safely with 3 point belts. You can also have em customize it as much as you want, could have em use the red stitching to match the type R red. Can also have carbon back and save all the weight you want. If you never want to use harnesses you can get a street version with the head rest holes)

This is what I would get (and am considering putting 2 of these in the type R)

I just got the Mugen MS-C Recaro seat. I’m a 34 waist it’s tight but I don’t mind. The seat comes with rails and all the plugs to not have your dash light up. Only thing that needs to be transferred is the belt buckle.

From pictures bucket seat looks really narrow. Especially the jdm brands. I like the idea of bride, spoon and Mugen. My evo's came with recaro that were comfortable.
I fit nicely in fl5 oem seat. Wouldn't want anything smaller. I will check out cobra and other recaro models.

Cobra is good up to 36in waist so probably good to try because you also don't want something too big.

I got to 276 but have been using the car as motivation to lose weight. Down to 265 after 4 weeks. I figure if I get down another 20 this thing will be actually comfortable.

congrats! keep at it, I am gonna join you very soon here because a few more pounds down would make it even more comfy. I also have a bet with my wife who suggested if I can get down to a healthy weight for my height I can possibly get a lotus elise so I need to get real here. To get in the Elise you absolutely have to be normal sized so its either loose some weight or never have a car I have wanted since it came out

lol yep, I need a lot of help here. Exige is out of the question, I tried to fit on my friends and with the fixed roof is a no go. Elise I can at least take the roof out and do some open roof motoring. Nice chassis mounted shifter, a nice exhaust and perfect weekend mountain road car

I have Recoro RS-G bucket seats in my S2000. It’s tight around the waist, shoulder and lats. Majority of friends at track days can’t fit in the car. It does help in keeping a check on one’s weight aside from the mirror, scale and belt.

I'm only 160 however I'm built more like a bulldog than a great Dane. With my work always traveling it's hard to get into the gym. I'm going to retire in 5 years and back doing bjj and mountain biking.
