997.2 or bust for me if I headed that route. But the jump from $50-60 => $70-80+ is just nuts. Also, after sitting in one, I'm not sure it checked the right box for me. Maybe I'm just too picky though, given the price. If I can't get the Type R, I'd probably have to save up for a new Cayman or something

997 is a better daily, the 996 is actually a better driver’s car. It feels more like an air-cooled 911 than it does a modern 911. Porsches should feel slightly industrial, in my mind. I teat drove a 991 and it drove like a BMW — a total bore.

I have a terribly skewed view of 911 generations — this is what I’ve driven:

996 GT3
997.2 C2
991.2 Turbo S
991.2 GT3
992 C2S
Out of those, the 996 GT3 was my absolute favorite. The 997.2 felt pure, the Turbo S was unnervingly fast, the 991 GT3 was way too much car, and the 992 C2S was very comfortable ?

That's the thing with the Type R, at least for me. It's a forever car that will slot in next to my S2000 to form my humble little Honda collection. I could see the GR Corolla being a forever car, too, for those who buy it. But the Elantra N? I could be wrong, but it just screams "flavor of the month" to me. Nothing against it personally, but it's not even on my radar.
We got a new Veloster N at the beginning of last month and never even entertained an Elantra N. They are fugly to me. The VN had to be new, blue & 6MT @ MSRP or we would have just gone with something else. I've shit on Hyundai/Kia since the 90's and it literally took them making a turbo hatchback, 1 door on one side 2 doors on the other, funky looking car that they were discontinuing for us to even consider it. So far so good, just hope it holds up for the long run. I believe at some point the '21-'22 VN's could become somewhat collectible.

I think both VN and Elantra N are not lookers. Especially VN with its unless trunk and rear seat visibility. Hyundai could've brought the i30n and actually took sales from the GTI but C level decision maker thought a niche vehicle in a niche segment was better.

Honestly If this came here instead of the VN, I would've saved the nearly 10 and gotten this over a Type R.

Fair enough, works fine for us. We have a B7 Passat as well so compared to that, yeah, visibility is worse and the trunk is small, but I wouldn't consider it useless by any means. It's deep and I believe larger than the GRC trunk space, which seems really small though I still plan on getting it. I had a 350Z and 370Z in the past so visibility never bothers me. Personally the i30n does nothing for me in the looks department.

I'd much rather prefer my cars to be functional than looks, I mean they're essentially the same car with one is design over function. I think VN is awkward looking at best but you know what you like.

Sounds like BMWs, getting more refined and less mechanical feeling every generation. Pretty much all feel was gone after the e90.
Have you driven a Cayman?

Me too, when we moved to Taiwan I was hoping I could get an i30, but the Koreans (and Honda) sell only SUVs here. Thank god for Ford, selling the Focus hatch here.

the 718 gts 4.0 is absolutely wonderful -- yeah, the gearing may be tall but it doesn't take away from the thrill!

I've driven the Cayman GTS in a manual. Awesome car but it stickered nearly 100k and its a toy more than a mode of transportation. I think for that much I'd go for a slightly used first gen v10 R8 or a AMG GTS.
