I remember back in the day, oh, 1991?...I had a 91 Civic Si hatch. 12 second all motor 1.6 liter! Yeah, stock engine. I Built in my basement. Full interior. Made the cover of...hmmmm....one of the import rags back then! Was a game screen for some PC drag racing game too! Epic shit. Anyway...I digress....
I autocrossed the car for a few years. Won the EP class over a Corvette...that was awesome!....I used to use Yokahama A008 tires. Which back in the day were a 'street legal' racing tire. I was a fan of the brand. But when I kept getting beat by everyone at one point, I wanted better. Everyone at the time was using BFG R1's....so I hooked up with the local Honda dealer and they sponsored me, bought me a set and....PRESTO! Win after win after win.....
Over the decades I've been a "tire guy". So much so I make my own rims designed around the rubber of choice for the particular setting. I'm still a tire guy and have researched, owned, raced and daily drive tons of tires.
My new go-to? Vredestein! Dutch company, part of ApolloTire, and a wicked tired for about any occasion! I came across them when looking for rubber for the TLX Type S. Needed a all season performance tire to tide me over til I decided on what to do. I picked up the Hypertrac ultra high perf all seasons. Wider than stock too, 275/35-20. And? In the snow the car was.....WICKED! I could out run anything, anywhere with that car. And they handled great too. Quiet. Supple. Fast!
I bought a set of their summer rubber, Ultrac Vorti+, and tracked that tire. SUPERB! Nelson Ledges, fastest track east of the mississippi. No noise. No slip. Nothing but grip! And 30 laps later with that heavy ass car? Looked like new! What a drive that was!
So fast forward a year + and I have the CTR now. Limped it home in the COLD and snow some 57 miles 2 weeks ago and it pretty much sat since aside from some clear days, waiting for the new rubber: Hypertrac! I was concerned though. was it the SH AWD? Was it the car weight? Was it truly the rubber when it came to snow handling.
So today I put the car/tires to the test on snow covered, icy CLE streets and.....lol....it's the Tires! Too. Grip was fantastic for a FWD car, launched like a bat out of hell! Gripped really well! But...it's NOT AWD. So yeah, there's that. But....totally comfortable with these and surprised how well they did. Phew!!
I put a set of Quadtrac Pro+ on the RDX....that car is unstoppable! And what I mean by that? I want to drive in 8" of snow like I do when it's 90 and sunny. And with these I can!
Sadly, the brand doesn't carry a appropriate size for my new 18" wheels. So I have to research again and find "THAT TIRE", that diamond in the rough that's quiet, track worthy and not an arm and a leg....sigh....
Front runner seem to be the Conti ExtremeContact Sport 02, which according to TireRack: "An all-around great tire, it remains a category benchmark for good reason." So we'll see.....
