SO, I am going to be honest I am not really doing this following any set plan... I just have a problem with two things in life: #1 - OOO Shiney and #2 Gotta Go Fast.

Either way, welcome. I am Necro (I am sure you can find my real name if you dig hard enough), and I, myself, am no mechanic. Nor do I, sadly, have the space in the apartment complex I live at to work on the FL5. What I do have though, is a good shop near by that specializes in most everything Honda, AND I would consider myself friends with most of the people there. All work on my car, to comply with my wife's laws and our apartment complexes rules, will be done there at Green Apple Automotive out here where I live in Pittsburgh, PA. Unless I otherwise note that I took the initiative to break something and do it myself.

I grabbed the FL5 from a dealership, around the end of 2023, that was charging way over MSRP for it; but I was coming from a 2012 Civic Si and a Type-R was kind of my dream car after I grew out of my Eclipse // Evo [RIP] phase ?.

Post Thoughts

Well... that is it really for now. I will post when I do something else here. Again, I have no roadmap or real plans... just taking it one confused step at a time for me. Thankfully I have some friends who are WAY smarter than I am, and I also have this forum now as well. August I will be making my way to Innovative Motorworks to meet with Derek at the Dyno and get a tune on everything that it is in it now.

After that... I think my next want is an exhaust that isn't stock, and because I have problems with money I am thinking about the Saclam FL5 Civic Type R Siren Circuit Exhaust I would like to work into the Hondata Fuel System and CanFLEX as well. I am also leaning towards the 27WON Kuro+ Turbo as well. I also know PRL has a Rear Motor Mount and I love supporting some home town friends, but I also see that SPOON has a nice Engine Transmision Mount Set. I am always open to suggestions, thoughts, and ritual sacrifices for my bank account.

Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk, see you in the next post.

Small Update - (Installation of the TSP: HVI -> Inlet Pipe)

So, I recently went and grabbed the @Two Step Performance HVI to Inlet Silicone pipe upgrade.
This replaces the PRL Silicones as well as the ugly (in my opinion) plastic elbow that is left behind.

Installing was pretty simple:
  • Screwdriver Flat (I used an interchangeable tip to fit on a 3/32 and T30)
  • Wrench and Socket Set
  • Allen Keys

Frist, I loosened all the housing, I moved the lines to the evap valve (there are come plastic clips that just pop off.) and I pulled the rigid line back on the left (I am not a mechanic so I couldn't tell you what it is sadly haha).

For this phase, I found it much easier to removed the plastic elbow, the evap valve uses the T30 Torx Bit. Then I pulled off the PRL silicones.

There is a red gasket here, be sure to move it to the billet aluminum insert on the TSP Coupler.

Then just fit it on there, remember to try and give yourself easy access to the Breeze worm gear clamps provided in the kit. I used my socket for them as well as the PRL removal, but you can easily use a flat head, I was just being extra. The evap valve insert uses the allen keys.

Once you're all battened down and sinched up, take photos and feel like a real mechanic even though we really didn't do much haha.

So gather around everyone and I will tell you how I, a self taught driver of a manual, smoked their FL5 OEM clutch at just under 20,000 miles.

So needless to say as that title, as long as a Japanese Isekai Anime Title, says: I smoked my clutch at just under 20,000 miles. I found this out when, a month or so ago, I went to IMW (Innovative Motorworks) for an in-person tune with Derek. Everything was going all well and good, so I thought. Pulled in after a long drive and restless night post three 12hr shift at the hospital. Derek lined it up, hooked Rem to the Dynapacks. Spun it out, seemed... fine? I didn't know. He did a couple more passes, and he comes to me with a sullen look and says, "You clutch is smoked." I am shocked, I do not really "beat on it" I do not do hard start pulls at lights or do much to any drag racing. Yes I drive "hard" but I assumed no more hard than what the FL5 was built for. We mull over the causes, and we are left kind of stumped because I am being honest when I say, I was not sure what I did wrong. I ask what he would recommend to buy, and he noted Exedy Stage 1 should more than suffice.

So I fast forward a little to Green Apple installing my shiny new clutch.

I come into the shop to grab the car, honestly curious as to what the OEM clutch looked like. We had all discussed what could have been the issue, factory defect, fluke, user error, oil, a combination. To the point that I even got Kassidy and the @Two Step Performance team curious as to, how should I say, "What the fuck?"

Turns out they are not supposed to look like that, who knew? Either way, I still vexed over what happened besides the obvious, I did something fucking stupid. What though? SO, I dived deep into Youtube videos on "How to Drive a Stick" and "How a Clutch Works" and the "Engineering of a Clutch" etc. I am, in all honesty, still pretty green at those concepts. Yes I had an Si 9th gen, and I drove that. I was taught on an old '97 civic sedan with nearly 200,000 miles on it. So it isn't like I had a parent or older sibling or family or friend to really "educate me" on the Do's and Don't's of driving a clutch. Turns out, when you are on a hill... you shouldn't put it in 1st and use the clutch to hold you from rolling back with NO break and sit there till a light turns green... which, I have sadly done, more of less, the whole life of the FL5. I full and well admit, it was my fault, and I am dumb for doing it. However you do not know, what you do not know, and I am here to put myself on blast by myself so other people can see it and know so they do not do the same shit I did.

This was a really big learning experience for me, and I cannot thank Derek, TSP, Aj, Nick, and all the people at Green Apple for helping teach me. I honestly and truly appreciate it.

On to brighter more positive notes: Went back and got my Tune.

Always good to see a happy ending! I know it was not all smiles and laughs along the way but good on you for keeping your head up in a not so fun situation. With the Exedy Stage 1 kit and a bit more knowledge now - it should be bulletproof!

May I ask if you have ever used your Brake Hold feature?

It is, usually, the very first thing I activate when driving my car. May, or may not, extend the life of your clutch

I have messed with it. But coming from cars in the 90s and early 2010s it was very new to me so I never really used it that much until about a month ago.

The FL5 has hill assist too, that I know 😂. I just honestly thought I found a cheat code for pulling out on a hill. Since I was ignorant to how a clutch worked (outside of car go vroom or car go stop) I didn't understand the harm I was doing to it. Combined with the aggressive driving I do, I understand how I damaged it so quickly. It was a tough lesson but one that lead to a part I was intending to get anyways, just wasn't expecting it that quick haha.

So, what I know on my FL5 that is always active is like a 3-Second hold that releases by itself. It activates after you have the brake depressed in neutral and then engage 1st gear. It will then, when you release the clutch, hold the brake for that short time.

Now I do know we have the "Brake Hold" button by the shifter that will hold the break for you like having the brake on with a quicker release. That is all I really know 🤷🏻‍♂️ I will read the manual later haha 😆. I know more now about my wife's new 2025 GR-Four then my FL5 😂.

On the bright side you still made it longer than the clutch change maintenance in a lambo

I will see if my brake holds (without the Brake Hold feature activated) next time I am at this stoplight that is on an incline to an overpass that I frequently have to stop at.
