How close? On my '17, the one-bar setting is just barely over a second and a half, which is about as close as I'm willing to risk driving. Two bars is dead-on at two seconds at any speed.
Oh yeah, and I've grown to like how it keeps the gap while other traffic can't decide on a speed. It means I don't have to constantly keep changing my set speed (or turning CC off). I don't care anymore whether the guy in front of me keeps wavering between 57 and 65 mph.
