Good idea! I tightened the clamp with the filter off to the point where the flange fit snugly, then inspected it for uniformity before installing. It looked nice and round, but I like your idea.
Yeah, I think it is fine alone, but the tape adds an extra layer of security. It fits super snug. No chance of it falling off or shifting under vibration.

you are sacrificing filtration for flow with aftermarket filters. personally, i just stick with the OEM filter as the minute gains from aftermarket don't seem worth it to me. but i live in an area with a lot of dust.
I’m probably going to put the stock intake back on. Originally, I just wanted the sound, but I’m not that into the sneezing noises after high rpm shifts, so there’s really no benefit at this point.

Same reason I don't run an aftermarket air filter. I have a white Si and 2 weeks after a wash, there's a fine black dust on my car. All that dust isn't being filtered by aftermarket filters.

I recall the first time I changed my factory air filter at 6k miles. I was surprised at how much crud it had caught. When I replaced the PRL filter the other day after 5k miles, the business end had literally no visible dirt, all it had caught was 1 bug. The inside of the MAF tube, however, had some visible dust. Not good!

Growing up my friends and I had RSXs and Civic SIs with aftermarket intakes and 200k miles and we never cleaned those filters.

I installed a AEM intake at like 40k miles, never washed for the next 150k+ and it ran just as amazing when I sold it as when i bought it.

So I’m not worried about these PRL filters

In real world use they seem to not cause any problems. But seeing visible dust in the intake tract doesn't sit right with me.

Understandable.

We all paid a lot for these cars. That’s why I try to just enjoy the car as much as possible and the intake noises help me do that.

If I worried about dust getting in the intake, people opening their car doors into mine, rock chips from the highway, nails from the road… I would never enjoy the damn thing and it would be a garage queen.

Yeah you've got a good point. Life's short, enjoy the car as much as possible.

But things like rock chips and door dings are things I can't control. Dust into the engine for some extra noise is something I can control.

But like I said earlier, most people don't have any issues running PRL intakes and filters. But I also live in the desert where fine dust is literally everywhere.

You can park in the back of the parking lot everytime! Lol

Yeah that’s different if you live in the desert. I’d keep the factory one on and change the filter more often then if that was the case.

Luckily I am in south Florida where the dust is minimal.

But yeah, enjoy the car! Get your monies worth! They’re still gonna screw you on trade in whether it has 150k or 15k miles! Lmao

that's the reason i stick with OEM filter. I paid a lot of money for the car, and want it to last a LONG time. good air filtration will keep the engine healthier longer. But i do plan on driving this for 300k+ miles, so you do you.

I'm not saying you're wrong about not worrying about the PRL filter, but here you have stated that you've had good luck with the AEM, which is what some of us are switching to. The PRL filter has gaps and is letting visible particulate into the intake tract. Maybe certain environments are fine for using such an open filter, but certainly not mine.

I’ve been thinking about switching to it too. I just want to make sure there is no gap like everyone’s been talking about
